Now next in this series on CSR, through this article let us delve into understanding how social innovations can play a crucial role in leveraging CSR and opening more possibilities for creating meaningful impact.

Unlocking Impact: The Power of Social Innovation in CSR

Social innovation within Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) involves developing inventive solutions to address societal issues. It goes beyond conventional philanthropy by fostering collaboration and targeting underlying causes. Through partnerships with various stakeholders such as NGOs, social enterprises, and others, companies can facilitate systemic change, promoting the scalability and replicability of solutions.

Embracing social innovation enhances corporate reputation and brand value, demonstrating a proactive commitment to societal well-being and driving meaningful change. By integrating social innovation into CSR strategies, companies can effectively tackle pressing challenges while aligning business objectives with positive social impact.

Catalyzing Change:The Art of Strategic Collaboration in CSR

Strategic collaboration plays a crucial role in driving social innovation through CSR. Companies are actively forming partnerships with non-profit organizations, research institutions, and social enterprises to leverage their collective expertise and resources. These strategic alliances foster an environment of co-creation and experimentation, which leads to the development of innovative solutions with a significant impact.

I. Center for Healthcare Entrepreneurship (CfHE): Bridging healthcare gaps through deploying innovative bio-medical devices

The Center for Healthcare Entrepreneurship (CfHE) at IIT Hyderabad is at the forefront of healthcare innovation, developing transformative technologies to address critical challenges. Through partnerships like the one with Indian Oil Corporation Limited - South Eastern Regional Pipelines Limited (IOCL-SERPL), CfHE's innovations are making a tangible impact on healthcare delivery. For example, IoT-enabled ICU ventilators developed through this collaboration have significantly enhanced patient care, demonstrating the power of merging CSR with healthcare entrepreneurship. Vizianagaram's District Hospital has been equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, including ventilators, thereby elevating the standard of care and positively impacting lives in rural areas. Likewise they have various innovations in addressing Neonatal jaundice, cervical cancer etc.

II. Bridging the Gap: Kibo's Quest for Digital Inclusion

Kibo by Trestle Labs addresses the digital literacy gap among underprivileged communities by offering accessible platforms and tailored learning modules. Recognizing the widening digital divide and its implications for socio-economic development, Kibo pioneers innovative approaches to impart digital skills and empower marginalized populations. Through user-friendly platforms and customized learning modules, Kibo equips individuals with the knowledge and tools necessary to confidently navigate the digital landscape. Schedule VII's emphasis on Fostering Innovation:

Schedule VII underscores the importance of fostering innovation through CSR funds, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and medicine. Contributions to research projects, incubators, and public-funded institutions align with CSR goals while promoting sustainable development and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As per the amendment on August 24, 2020 (G.S.R. 525(E)) the following two clauses have been included to extend the support to harness research and innovation.

Activity ix. (a) Contribution to incubators or research and development projects in the field of science, technology, engineering and medicine, funded by Central Government or State Government or Public Sector Undertaking or any agency of the Central Government or State Government

ix. (b)Contributions to public funded Universities; Indian Institute of Technology (IITs); National Laboratories and autonomous bodies established under Department of Atomic Energy (DAE); Department of Biotechnology (DBT); Department of Science and Technology (DST); Department of Pharmaceuticals; Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH); Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and other bodies, namely Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO); Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR); Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), engaged in conducting research in science, technology, engineering and medicine aimed at promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)].

In light of these opportunities, we urge companies to reconsider their CSR allocations and prioritize initiatives that embrace innovation to positively impact lives. By aligning CSR efforts with innovative solutions, companies can catalyze meaningful change and contribute to building a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future.
