Unlock Your Creative Genius: 10 Surprising Tactics That Actually Work!

We are living an AI news hyped life. The path ahead can be confusing…

We will be living soon in a disrupted world, with the benefits and its challenges. Nobody can confidently tell us how work life will look in the next 10 to 20 years… So, what do we do? Stay frozen and stop evolving cause future is unknown? Or we all become AI experts? If we would have done any of this, humanity as we know it, would not exist.

In times of change, isolate the constants. One of these is human creativity. I believe there will always be value in it. I am actually even more bullish on it’s value, I believe it will reach new heights due to access to so much new knowledge to spark novel services, capabilities, solutions, tech…

If you’re like me, take the bet, invest in yourself and your creativity! Carry on reading, I expect you will find nuggets of gold inside.

You might believe creativity is something you either have or you don’t.

2 years ago, I’ve started working with somebody I can call my friend now. She is confident, razor sharp intelligent, has strong work ethic, a valuable network, she was appreciated by her team and leadership. Family life happy and stable. Money secure. She was tired. She felt demotivated and did not understand why.. she was feeling guilty for not being happy and the down spiral was on and on and on…

I don’t know if it ever happened to you, or somebody that you care about. It’s heart breaking to witness!

We started meeting every week. Digging each time a little bit deeper. Until we found 2 springs of water: 1. She was feeling she was not learning anymore 2. She wanted something of her own and had 0 ideas what.

She felt trapped. Without escape, no time to think, not ready to do like me and leap outside in the unknown.

I told her about my journey. And the creativity miracle: suddenly from dry, arid desert to a river of ideas. Slowly and then suddenly.

She remained skeptical, but we kept on meeting every week. 3 months later, I remember the day, the eyes sparkled, the first idea came. In 2 weeks she confessed everywhere she looked, new ideas came. 2 years later, the motor is still on burning.

I do not understand the science, maybe some of you might know… if you do, tell me too! What I do know is that I see this pattern over and over again…

I write here what we’ve done together.

But before going into the solution mode, just 2 small step backs for a wider perspective.

Progress. How do you know?

In any journey, you want to have sign posts along the way to give you the sense of progress. Once the first big leap is done and creativity finds soil to grow, you want to keep watering it and observe how it evolves.

I looked for ways to measure creativity, I did not find anything suitable in a work/career setting. So, I developed one and included it in 5 Personas. You can test yourself and find your 5 Persona readiness. I will put the link in the article resources (4).

Pitfalls. What to stay aware of once you become highly creative?

Lack of focus. It’s so easy to be swayed away by a new idea… Working with your mindset and identity are the best ways to manage this stage elegantly.

Difficult decisions due to extensive options. Options are good, create too many and you will drown. Decisions systems will help with this.

Unhealthy ownership – always have an idea for a solution hence you jump, offer it and end up owning it. Just be careful whom you offer space to take advantage of it. Only one advice here, stay away of the toxic, they will run you on empty.

Now, it’s time for the solutions.

The Creativity Protocol

These are my 10 tested systems to unlock your creative genius.

Level 1

Allow it. Make the LEAP from 0 to 0.1.

  • Creating psychological safety environments to feel free to be you and vulnerable. Bring people around you that allow for this space to talk, brainstorm, counterbalance ideas with other ones or nuances, what ifs? Find people that enjoy the new, have taken chances and are credible in their pursuit of creativity and spend time with them.
  • The power of stupid ideas. This is how great ideas evolve, from one idea into another version, 3-4 iterations later your are onto something. Start a list with the most stupid ideas you have. It is freeing, no pressure to be smart, or new or groundbreaking. You can listen to Jesse Itzler, talking about this idea progress (1)
  • Kids workshops. Take your kids or borrow from a friend, and spend 15min brainstorming. Ask them questions, give them clues. List everything they say. Take some time after to spin from their ideas into something that can be done. I am doing this with my kids, they generally come up with 20 ideas in 15 min. At least one of them is something I can build on…

Level 2

Explore around the edges.

  • Experiments. This is one the most powerful approaches. The mindset is first, starting to think like a mad scientist, that gathers data on what works and what does not. What I find sometimes as the biggest blocker to creativity, is the pressure to be a ground breaking idea. So we dismiss almost everything that comes. What experiments mindset and approach does, is to remove this pressure.
  • Limited time only’ ideas, a concept I have borrowed from Tim Ferriss. It is a mental model where you allow yourself to try something for a limited time. This will reduce the pressure of being a good idea, being forever and allow your mind to go free.
  • Perspective shifting. I have done this first time in a coaching sessions 15 years ago. It felt strange I had to physically move during the session, taking different vantage points in the room and embodying different characters.
  • Divergent Thinking (2):Practices that induce motionlessness and deep relaxation while awake can increase dopamine in pathways like the nigrostriatal circuit to enhance divergent thinking. After such practices like NSDR or yoga nidra, engage in creative exploration and thinking.Movement also plays a role in activating neural pathways conducive to creativity. During activities like walking or swimming without conscious attention to specific sensory targets, you can access new ideas, combining this with skills in your field to improve creativity (3)

Level 3

Embrace the unexpected you.

  • Immersive practices: let yourself be carried by curiosity and explore areas that at first have nothing to do with each other. Once you know enough about the subject you explore, ask yourself how would you apply it to something else, unconnected, that you are trying to solve?
  • Mindset: embrace your quirkiness. Anything that is mindset is extremely powerful. Changing your operating system will unleash a different way to approach almost anything. And creativity feeds on different. The very powerful mindset shift is understanding what makes you unique and accepting it is a superpower rather than not fitting in. The overlap of personal interests, life experiences, values, career set-up make you unique.

Level 4

Thrive in uncertainty. The 10x of creativity.

I think telling you that art, drama and poetry thrive on creativity is not ground breaking. What might be surprising, is the effect they have on you, that you carry outside of the stage or your poetry notebook. There are endless examples of creative minds in history, that entertained artistic endeavors as hobbies or even intentional. Albert Einstein was playing the violin, Marie Curie was painting and drawing, Nikola Tesla who had a fascination with poetry and often recited verses from memory. Look deep and you will find the signs in many that you know…

I hope this article inspires you to try something new, on your path to expand your creativity.

The world needs your unique ideas and perspectives!

Be amazing! Be Solutionary!

There's a lot of "gold" in here Andra Fola. I really like the concept of time-limited ideas. I lack discipline in this area, so I'm going to give that a go. Thank you!
