Unlock Your Negotiation Potential: Tips for Success in Any Scenario
Do you negotiate? What for? Who with? WHY?
Negotiation is a vital skill in both personal and professional settings. Whether you're negotiating with your HR department to get Christmas Eve off, asking your manager for a pay rise, bargaining for a laptop, haggling over fruit at a market, or convincing your parents to give you a lift to a friend's house, the principles of negotiation remain the same.
Negotiation (verb): obtain or bring about by discussion.
Despite its often negative connotations, negotiation is a fundamental aspect of business and life. Improving your negotiation skills can enhance your career and personal life.
"Know what you want to achieve prior to starting to negotiate. It’s the golden rule but the one most people fail to heed. Without a plan, you allow the opposing party to define your goals instead of the other way around." ~ Ivanka Trump
Preparing for Negotiation
Before you enter any negotiation, preparation is key. Consider the following:
Write down everything you can think of; you never know what might come in handy. This preparation isn't just about what YOU know; do some research, ask colleagues or management about their experiences.
1. Introduction
When you enter the negotiation room, remember you only get about 5 seconds to make a first impression.
Which entrance scenario do you think will have the best outcome?
2. Discussion
After the initial pleasantries, it's time for each side to present their case. It's helpful to take notes during this stage to ensure all points are clear.
"One of the best ways to persuade others is by listening to them." ~ Dean Rusk
3. Clarify All Positions
From the discussion, clarify the goals, interests, and viewpoints of both sides. List these in order of priority. Clarification is essential to avoid misunderstandings and establish common ground.

4. Negotiation
Once goals and viewpoints are clear, the negotiation begins. Aim for a 'win-win' outcome where both sides feel positive about the process and the result.
Consider alternative strategies and compromises that may offer greater benefits to both parties than the original positions.
Tips:
Be aware of your BATNA (Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement). What is the best alternative to not making a deal today? Never go into a negotiation feeling desperate to close the deal; desperation is easily perceived and weakens your position. Think about your alternatives beforehand to boost your confidence.
"The worst thing you can possibly do in a deal is seem desperate to make it. That makes the other guy smell blood, and then you’re dead." ~ Donald Trump
5. Review
Reviewing the negotiation is a crucial part of the process. Reflect on the following:
It's important to do this review as soon as possible while the experience is still fresh in your mind.
