Unlocking AI Potential: How Large Organizations Can Innovate WITHOUT Compromising Security and Compliance.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the role AI plays in our world and how we can use it to innovate and serve at a higher level. Let’s be real – technology is moving faster than ever, and it’s easy to get caught up in the hype, thinking every shiny new tool is a magic bullet.

But here’s the truth: tools like AI are only as good as how well you use them.

I’m a big believer in leveraging the right tools, at the right time, in the right way to drive results. And AI? It’s one of the BEST tools we’ve got right now.

The Difference Between Just Using Tools and Leveraging Them

There’s a big difference between using tools and leveraging tools. Some people use AI because everyone else is talking about it. But using it for the sake of using it doesn’t create value.

What creates value is leveraging it to actually solve real problems—making your workflow more efficient, enhancing the experience for those you serve, and freeing up time to focus on the high-impact activities that truly move the needle.

For me, it’s about being intentional. AI is a game-changer when it comes to speed and scalability, but only when it’s integrated with purpose. In my businesses, I don’t just look at AI as something to make my life easier (although, let’s be honest, it totally does that too). I see it as a way to serve people better.

That’s the key – using technology to serve people, not replace human connection.

AI for Innovation and Impact

We’re at a point where AI can do so much heavy lifting in business – analyzing data, optimizing processes, and improving decision-making. But what I’m most excited about is how we can use it to innovate and solve problems that couldn’t be solved before.

Take something like economic development, for example. Using AI, we can now analyze data on a level that was never possible before, predicting trends, identifying needs, and crafting solutions that actually make a difference for communities. Imagine the impact when we leverage AI to better understand what small businesses in Indiana or other states need to thrive, or when we use it to enhance the services we provide to entrepreneurs. This isn’t just about automation; it’s about innovation.

Efficiency Without Losing the Human Element

One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that efficiency doesn’t have to come at the cost of connection. A lot of people fear AI because they think it’ll replace jobs or remove the personal touch. But when used right, AI doesn’t replace people – it amplifies what they can do. It allows us to spend more time on what matters, like building relationships, while AI handles the repetitive or analytical tasks that would normally slow us down.

I’m always looking for ways to serve others, whether it’s through my work with the state, building software, or just in my day-to-day interactions. AI has given me a way to do that more effectively. I can process information faster, make smarter decisions, and ultimately, create more value for the people I’m serving. But it’s important to remember, no matter how powerful the tool, it’s still just a tool. It’s how you use it that makes the difference.

But I get it, I get it...—there’s one thing a lot of leaders hesitate on when it comes to AI: That's SECURITY.

Especially when you’re dealing with sensitive information like medical records, or PII (personally identifiable information), or compliance regulations, it can feel like you’re walking a tightrope.

I hear this all the time from organizations, where privacy and security are paramount. The question is always the same: “How can we leverage AI without compromising our security?”

The good news is, there’s a solution...

Using AI Without Compromising Security: (This gets a bit technical)

Here’s the thing—AI is not the risk, poor implementation is. If you’re smart about how you integrate it, you can harness the full power of tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT without compromising your data or security protocols. The key lies in setting up the right systems.

One option is deploying your own small, organization-specific AI language model. By hosting the model within your own secure environment—whether it’s on-premise or in a private cloud—you maintain full control over your data. This way, nothing leaves your firewall, and you can still leverage AI for all the benefits like automation, data analysis, and decision-making for you tearms.

For organizations that need to interact with AI in real-time, anonymizing or encrypting sensitive data before it’s fed into the AI system is another viable option. This means any personal identifiers—names, addresses, financial details—are either replaced by a token or encrypted, ensuring that no sensitive information ever leaves your control. AI can still work its magic, but without putting your data at risk.

Finally, it’s crucial to establish role-based access, permissions, authentications, and encryption at multiple steps. This ensures that only the right people have access to sensitive data when needed, and everything remains secure—both in transit and at rest.

Addressing Leadership Fears

A lot of people in leadership positions rightly fear these risks. They see AI as a potential weak link in security or compliance. But the reality is, with the right approach, AI can strengthen operations while safeguarding data. It’s all about how you implement and manage the system/solution.

Leaders shouldn’t be afraid of AI— in my opinion, we should all be asking how to integrate with it in a way that benefits our teams, enhances efficiency, and keeps data secure.

By leveraging AI tactically, organizations can truly innovate while staying compliant.

The result? Greater impact, without the security headaches...
