Unlocking Boardroom Potential: The Power of Women's Leadership and Board Diversity

Written by Evelyn Dilsaver

As someone who has had the privilege of serving on various corporate boards, I’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of diversity in leadership. The push for greater boardroom diversity is not just a trend—it’s a necessity. Companies with diverse boards consistently outperform their peers in innovation, profitability, and risk management. In my experience, board diversity is key to unlocking new perspectives and driving meaningful change.

The Importance of Diverse Perspectives

Diversity of thought is essential to avoid groupthink and to foster the innovation necessary for a company’s success. My journey as the first and often only woman on several boards has shown me how critical it is to have voices from different backgrounds and perspectives at the table. When all views are represented and heard, boards can make better decisions that benefit not just shareholders but employees, customers, and communities as well.

Women’s Unique Contributions

I am a firm believer in the unique value that women bring to leadership roles. Women often possess a holistic view that balances empathy with business acumen, which enhances decision-making processes and leads to better outcomes. Our contributions are not only vital to improving organizational performance but also to creating a more inclusive and equitable workplace culture.

Building a Path to Board Leadership

My own journey to board leadership has been shaped by strong mentors and sponsors who helped open doors along the way. I encourage all women aspiring to serve on boards to cultivate curiosity, build strong networks, and commit to lifelong learning. These qualities will help you navigate your path to leadership, but more importantly, they will help you stay ahead in a rapidly evolving business landscape.

Key Strategies for Board Success

To succeed on a board and make a meaningful impact, there are several key strategies I always recommend:

  • Embrace Diversity and Inclusion: Seek opportunities to learn from people who are different from you. Creating an environment where diverse perspectives can thrive is critical to success.
  • Cultivate Strategic Thinking: Stay ahead of industry trends and emerging technologies. Strategic thinking is essential in ensuring your board decisions are informed and forward-looking.
  • Build a Strong Personal Brand: Know your unique value and communicate it clearly. Network intentionally with leaders and influencers in your industry to create visibility for your skills and contributions.
  • Champion Women’s Leadership: Be an advocate for gender equity, mentor other women, and use your platform to amplify their voices. Together, we can create a path for the next generation of women leaders.

Take Action: Get On Board!

If you're ready to take your leadership journey to the next level, I encourage you to get involved in initiatives like How Women Lead’s #GetOnBoard Week. These programs offer valuable resources, workshops, and networking opportunities designed to prepare women to secure board seats and thrive in leadership roles.

The value of women’s leadership and boardroom diversity cannot be overstated. By embracing diversity, supporting women’s advancement, and creating spaces where all voices are heard, we can unlock the full potential of corporate boards and drive lasting success for organizations. Let’s continue to push for greater representation and ensure that the next generation of women leaders is ready to step up.
