Unlocking progress through bioinnovation.

Unlocking progress through bioinnovation.

Why we need a new development model.

Our ability to live within the limits offered by nature is the greatest challenge faced by humanity. It is a challenge that requires immediate action and can only be met with concerted commitment, engagement and knowledge from the global civil society, business, government and academic leadership.

We need a critical reassessment of our lifestyle and how the current linear, standardized industrial model (where we source, produce, use, and dispose) has made us mere consumers, relieving our ability to understand the origins, the “soul” and the impact of our demands.

This inefficient development paradigm wastes scarce and limited raw materials, energy and human resources. It causes economic, social and environmental imbalances that reinforce underdevelopment, marginalization, excess, inequality, ignorance and the alienation of society.

Society's prosperity, therefore, necessarily entails challenging our ingrained habits and questioning the status quo, encouraging new models of development that generate shared value and provide greater awareness of the environment and its limitations.

But development alone is not enough. As Brazil and the world become progressively aware of the exhaustion of the current model and show signs of political and economic transformation, our leaders must build a renewed vision of what kind of progress we need.

We urgently need to lay the groundwork for the smart and widespread use of technologies and innovations already available that can reconnect economy, society and the environment.

In this context, the bioeconomy emerges as a clear and immediate solution to this mission.

How will we harness the power of modern biology - and its consequent technological innovations - to drive economic modernization, increase productivity and promote sustainable progress for all?

With the theme "Unlocking progress through bio-innovation", the 2019 Brazil Bioeconomy Forum & Award sought to answer these questions and focused its discussions on how connecting innovation to the bioeconomy unlocks great potential to drive a new wave of progress for Brazil and the world.

For me! The brazilian bioeconomy is still something far from being unlocked. With no ofenses, our society is poor in terms of education and culture. So, it becomes easy to cause misunderstandings and manipulations regarding the economic potential the brazilian biotechnology has. We already moved from where we were a few years ago. If the strategy is well designed we can compete face-to-face with USA, CHINA and others. But first of all, we need very good education to our nation.
