Unveiling the Green Wealth of LVPEI GMR Varalakshmi Campus

In the bustling city of Visakhapatnam lies a hidden gem, the L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), GMR Varalakshmi Campus, where nature thrives amidst urban chaos. The joy it provides staff, patients and visitors is priceless.

A Comprehensive Green Space Assessment (CGSA) was conducted recently of the campus by Infinite Green Solutions (IGS), to quantify the monetary value of the ecological services provided by this green oasis, at least the tangibles! The findings were not surprising in the least and shed light on the significance of the institute’s efforts to preserve nature.

Some key findings of the report:

Total Biomass: A whopping 2,21,459 kilograms! That's the weight of all the organic matter on the campus.

Carbon Storage Potential: The in-site vegetation stores 8,035 kilograms of carbon annually, improving soil health and benefitting the environment.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) Sequestration Potential: The campus captures a staggering 29,488 kilograms of CO2 from the atmosphere each year, helping reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions.

Oxygen Production Potential: A remarkable output of 1,50,16,971 liters of oxygen per year, making it the lungs of the city!

Monetary Value of the Vegetation: An estimated total value of 4,37,27,552 Indian Rupees, highlighting the economic importance of green spaces.

As of March 2024, the vegetation has already stored a noteworthy 1,10,730 kilograms of carbon, indicative of its substantial impact.

Annual carbon dioxide sequestration rate of 29,488 kilograms, with a cumulative total of 4,06,378 kilograms sequestered by March 2024

Sequestration is the process of capturing and storing a substance, such as carbon dioxide, to prevent it from entering the atmosphere.

The campus vegetation serves as a prolific oxygen generator, producing an astonishing total of 20,69,53,603 liters of oxygen as of March 2024.

These numbers represent the tangible benefits that green spaces provide to society. With global warming upon us, it is time we appreciate the value of preserving nature and creating more green spaces. The intangibles value of green spaces is priceless!

L V Prasad Eye Institute upholds a commitment to environmental stewardship in all its centers, striving to generate green wealth and promote sustainability. Beyond the aesthetic appeal, these green havens offer a sanctuary for biodiversity, mitigate the impact of climate change, improve air quality, and enhance the overall well-being of the community.

Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond our green campuses. Our other initiatives include using solar energy and embracing renewable energy sources to reduce our carbon footprint. Additionally, our Kadapa Centre stands as a beacon of energy efficiency and sustainability, designed in accordance with IGBC regulations. By prioritizing environmental responsibility in every aspect of our operations, from energy usage to infrastructure development, we aim to lead by example in creating a greener, more sustainable future for all.

As we navigate the challenges of urbanization and climate change, the institute increasingly is protective of its green spaces; for they are not just assets but lifelines for generations to come.
