Updating Rocky Linux 9.4 packages

Rocky Linux was founded by Gregory Kurtzer, one of the original founders of CentOS, in December 2020. The project was initiated following Red Hat's announcement that it would shift focus from CentOS Linux to CentOS Stream, leading to concerns about stability and predictability among users relying on CentOS.

Rocky Linux has a vibrant community of users and contributors who collaborate on development, provide support, and share knowledge.

Although Rocky Linux is community-driven, various third-party vendors offer commercial support and services for organizations that require professional assistance.

Tools and documentation are available to help users migrate from CentOS to Rocky Linux smoothly. This includes scripts and guides to convert existing CentOS systems to Rocky Linux without needing a complete reinstallation.

Rocky Linux represents a significant effort to provide a stable and reliable RHEL-compatible operating system for enterprises and users who rely on CentOS's legacy.

Today we will update a bare metal deployment of Rocky Linux 9.4 on a business laptop.

We will update 2 packages:

  • less-590-4.el9_4.x86_64
  • libnghttp2-1.43.0-5.el9_4.3.x86_64

The less utility is a text file browser that resembles more. Less allows you to move backward in the file as well as forwards. Since less doesn't have to read the entire input file before it starts, less starts up more quickly than text editors (for example, vi).

libnghttp2 is a library implementing the Hypertext Transfer Protocol version 2 (HTTP/2) protocol in C. HTTP/2 is designed to improve the performance of web communications by reducing latency, improving multiplexing, and enabling efficient use of network resources.

libnghttp2 is a dependency for various applications and services that require HTTP/2 capabilities, such as:

  • Web Servers: Apache HTTP Server (httpd) and NGINX use libnghttp2 to enable HTTP/2 support.
  • Browsers: Modern web browsers utilize HTTP/2 for faster page loads and improved web performance.
  • APIs and Microservices: Applications that communicate over HTTP can benefit from the enhanced features of HTTP/2.

Please always ensure you have a backup before making significant changes to your system.

Let's run the update:
