Urban Legends, Recruiting Myths, and Work-life balance?

Urban Legends, Recruiting Myths, and Work-life balance?

Happy election week? I’m just happy it is over. I’m sure the results will continue to dominate the news for a long time. And that’s all I have to say about that.

Speaking of news, the concept of fake news became a thing 8-9 years ago. I have no interest in wading into those waters either. One thing that isn’t new is the concept of myths and urban legends.

When I was a kid - the 13-story haunted house was a big one (which became a thing!). So was Mikey from the Life cereal commercials dying from drinking a Coke and eating pop rocks (the 80s sure were strange).

Urban legends have also been part of the recruiting world.

  • There’s the “hidden job market” - a wonderful place with jobs that pay >$250k and only 2-3 people know about them.
  • The biggest is the myth about counter offers. Since the day I started, I was told that 70% (or some made-up percentage) of people who accept counter offers leave within 6 months of accepting them.

Is that real? Who knows. It is impossible to measure.

  • Some realize they are in a bad spot and a few promises when they try and break up don’t end up fixing anything.
  • Very few get replaced because the company just used the time to hire their replacement (the root of the late 90s recruiting urban legend).
  • Some end up staying. And flourishing.

It all depends!

How’s that for efficiency? In 4 paragraphs I touched on the “biggest election in history,” to 80s urban legends, to debunking the biggest recruiting myth of all time. Hopefully without offending anyone.

And that’s our segue to this week’s beyond the offer. Rosanna and Bill chat with Sonya Heer about her journey and a few other recruiting myths.

In this episode of Beyond the Offer, hosts Rosanna Snediker and Bill Gates chat with Sonya Heer, Talent Acquisition Operations Manager at Delta Dental. Sonya reflects on her 16-year recruiting career, her shift into TA operations, and the role of communication, technology, and data. They also discuss work-life balance, inclusive benefits, and debunk common recruiting misconceptions while sharing tips for staying connected in remote work. Tune in to learn more!
