Urgent Community Appeal
7 days ago, our prime minister stood up outside of No 10 and told the population of the UK that communities would need to pull together and help each other in order to get through the current coronavirus pandemic which is set to get worse over the coming weeks and months.
7 days ago, my local town where Clerksroom is based created a Facebook support group where members of the community can ask for help and volunteers can register their willingness to support the community. Within 48 hours, 10,000 people had come forward and offered help to those in need. An amazing show of community spirit.
Within 7 days, the number of volunteers signed up to help and do whatever they can and with whatever resources they have has reached 12,000 in our TA1 and TA21 postcode region. The same is happening throughout the UK. What an amazing spirit the UK has when in crisis.
The problem with the limitations of Facebook is that it does not allow for individual requests and offers to be co-ordinated and the sheer volume of requests can be overwhelming for the volunteer admin team. Volunteers need to be registered and a database needs to be set up to register the volume of volunteers and their locations.
Since the current situation has got worse and is set to get more serious with possible lockdowns, more and more people in the community will need help with food deliveries, collection of prescriptions, supplies for pets or perhaps someone will just need a volunteer to walk their dog. So far I have been asked to contact chemists, suppliers, deliver urgent packages, take supplies to a hospital because the daughter of the elderly chap lives too far away. We have collected prescriptions, found much-needed supplies etc. All well and good but not scalable and not sustainable for the admin team to do without much-needed tools.
The solution is a postcode based, a searchable website where you can:
- Submit a request for someone to help you
- Register as a volunteer in your local area
- Post information about local suppliers and services operating and able to help in a crisis
Legacy
As we are raising money to build this website urgently, a key aim is to make the site a legacy product for the long term so it can provide a national hub for finding a volunteer in your local area for a long time to come. We hope that this can be something good to come out of the crisis.
What are we doing?
3 days ago, we completed the written design of the new website and registered www.LocalVolunteer.co.uk and started a crowdfunding page at Just Giving.
We have raised £922 in 4 days and aiming to raise £5,000 to complete phase 1 of the website and publish it live in the next 5-7 days.
Phase 1
Phase 1 is the launch of the website at www.LocalVolunteer.co.uk and allows anyone with a non-vulterable need to register by postcode. It will allow volunteers to register by postcode. Admin users will be able to approve and match the requests to the offers and confirm by email to both parties. Volunteer registration and checking.
Phase 2 which will be subject to funding and more detail being checked with the relevant services will allow for advanced checking, secret passwords and compliance with any relevant rules relating to the much-needed service for the vulnerable persons needs. i.e. giving lifts.
Key Golden Rules:
- Do not enter anyone's home
- Do not make direct contact with anyone
- Do not exchange money (all purchases must be paid for in advance and collected by the volunteer)
- Do not get into a vehicle with a stranger
- Always make sure someone knows where you are going and whom you are meeting
