The Validation Paradox - Break Free from Validation Trap!

Aristotle once said, "Criticism is something you can easily avoid by saying nothing, doing nothing, being nothing." This quote perfectly encapsulates the fear that can hold us back: the fear of disapproval. While seeking validation can be a natural human desire, for many women, it can become an obstacle to growth.

Obsessive validation seeking can limit your ability to make your own choices and drain your energy in the pursuit of pleasing others. However, in his TED Talk, "The Validation Paradox: Finding Your Best Through Others," Jeffrey Shaw flips the script on this fear.

Shaw argues that true growth and awe-inspiring experiences often lie beyond our comfort zones. By reaching out and connecting with others for support, we can push ourselves further and unlock our full potential. This journey of stepping outside the familiar allows us to experience the wonder and excitement that comes with pushing boundaries and achieving more than we ever thought possible.

SO WHY IS IT THAT WOMEN OFTEN FEEL THE NEED FOR VALIDATION?

Socialization and societal expectations often make women seek validation through appearance, achievements, and approval. This historical need for female dependence on others is slowly changing, but experiences with sexism and discrimination can still contribute to lower self-esteem. Ultimately, building inner strength and self-acceptance allows women to find validation within themselves.

Most women are socialized from an early age to seek validation from others. This comes from a historical need to appeal to others in order to survive.  Yes, up until very recently, and in some countries like ours, it is still the case, women do not have any power to own property, have a bank account or lines of credit, were not allowed to drive etc.  It's still true and I have so many sharing these stories even today.

How is the Need for Approval Holding You Back?

  • Limiting Your Choices - Fear of disapproval
  • Inhibiting Creativity and Innovation - playing it safe.
  • People-Pleasing Tendencies - Sacrificing your needs leading to burnout.
  • Inability to Make Decisions: The fear of making the wrong decision due to a need for approval can lead to procrastination and indecisiveness.

Here are some tips to overcome the need for approval:

  • Focus on intrinsic motivation: Identify your own values and passions. What truly excites and motivates you, regardless of external validation? Pursue these goals for your own sense of fulfillment.
  • Develop self-compassion: Learn to be kind to yourself, mistakes and all. Celebrate your achievements, big and small. You are worthy of self-acceptance, regardless of what others think.
  • Set healthy boundaries: Don't be afraid to say "no" to requests that drain your energy or compromise your values. Prioritize your own well-being and learn to be comfortable with not pleasing everyone.
  • Embrace challenges: View setbacks as opportunities for growth, not reasons to seek approval. Learn from your mistakes and keep moving forward.
  • Celebrate small wins: Acknowledge your progress, even the small victories. This builds confidence and a sense of accomplishment, reducing reliance on external validation.
  • Focus on your circle of influence: Surround yourself with supportive people who value you for who you are and encourage you to be your true self. Find your community or tribe where you can express judgement free.

African philosophy of Ubuntu

During my coaching journey, the African philosophy of Ubuntu particularly resonated with me. The concept of "I am because we are" offers a unique perspective on how women can approach validation:

1. Shifting the Focus:

  • Ubuntu promotes a sense of shared worth and collective success. Instead of solely relying on external validation for self-worth, women can find validation through contributing to a supportive community.
  • Focus on uplifting others: By offering support and validation to other women, a sense of purpose and fulfillment can be found, contributing to a stronger sense of self-worth that isn't solely dependent on individual external validation.

2. Building a Healthy Support System:

  • Ubuntu emphasizes the importance of strong community bonds. Having a network of supportive women who value you for who you are, not just your achievements, can be a powerful source of validation and encouragement.
  • Sharing experiences and vulnerabilities: Within a safe and supportive community, women can openly discuss their struggles with validation seeking and receive understanding and encouragement from others who may have faced similar challenges.

3. Redefining Validation:

  • Ubuntu encourages a shift from needing constant external approval to a more holistic sense of self-worth. Validation can come from personal growth, contributing to the community, and the collective success of those around you.

Example:

Most of the woman hesitant to pursue her dream career due to self-doubt. An Ubuntu-inspired approach might involve:

  • Connecting with a women's mentorship program: Finding a community of supportive women who can offer guidance and encouragement.
  • Celebrating the success of other women: Finding inspiration from the achievements of others and contributing to a supportive network.
  • Focusing on personal growth: Taking steps towards her goals, recognizing progress, and finding satisfaction in the journey, not just external validation of the final outcome.
  • Coaching for growth - Coaching can be a powerful tool for women seeking to break free from the validation trap. Through a supportive and confidential space, a coach can help women identify the root causes of their validation seeking, such as societal expectations or past experiences. By exploring these factors, women can begin to understand and challenge negative self-beliefs. The coach can then guide them in developing strategies to build self-confidence and internal validation.

By embracing the spirit of Ubuntu, women can:

  • Develop a stronger sense of self-worth that is not solely dependent on external validation.
  • Build a supportive community that provides encouragement and validation.
  • Redefine validation to include personal growth and contributions to the collective good.

Reflective:

  • Take some time to reflect. Are there specific situations or areas in your life where you find yourself seeking approval most strongly?
  • What are some of your core values and passions? What truly excites and motivates you, independent of external validation?
  • Think about your journey of self-discovery so far. What are some moments where you've learned something important about yourself?
