The Value of a Coach

Can a coach help you when you are trying to achieve a goal such as landing a job?

Absolutely.

Having been there myself as a job seeker multiple times during my corporate career, I can attest to the helpfulness of a coach.

C = Caring Intent - The motive to coach is the desire to help the other to improve, to become what they are capable of being. In other words, coaching comes from love.

O = Observing the Client- Coaches gather data and take a good look before intervening. Careful direct observation provides the coach with input for the next step.

A = Asking Powerful Questions and Assessing Leverage Points - Coaches ask penetrating questions and listen intently to the client. With this understanding of the client, the coach can now identify and pinpoint the specific changes that have the highest value, i.e. the leverage points.

C = Communicating Feedback - Now the coach intervenes, approaching the other with the offer of input, intended to enhance performance.

H = Helping the Other to Change - The effectiveness of coaching ultimately depends upon the client's desire to improve. If that desire is there, the coach knows that change is seldom instantaneous. There is likely to be a learning curve. And the coach is ready to help the other through the process.

With the help of a coach, one can gain a competitive edge.

Terrence H. Seamon, I am always in awe of and inspired by your use of accronyms! This is just another great example. I suspect, though, sharing our successes with clients is as importnat. For example, I can say that 94% of my clients find workwithin 3-5 months of workign with me. Yet, most job seekers, without a coach, take 6-9 months according to research by the NJ DOL.
