A prominent Silicon Valley VC is taking an indefinite leave and will seek professional counseling after six women accused him of making unwanted advances. "To say I'm sorry about my behavior is a categorical understatement," Binary Capital's Justin Caldbeck told Axios. "Still, I need to say it: I am so, so sorry." Caldbeck also apologized to his firm, whom he said had been "completely blindsided" and, earlier, denied the charges …
… Calbeck's decision follows nearly universal shunning from the venture capital community. Prominent investors — including First Round's Josh Kopelman, Upfront's Mark Suster and Greylock's Reid Hoffman — all publicly spoke out against the alleged behavior across social media Friday. #SVSexualHarassment
A fifth Republican Senator came out against the chamber's Obamacare replacement bill, further complicating leadership's desire to pass it before the July 4 break. Sen. Dean Heller is up for election in 2018 — like one other holdout, Sen. Ted Cruz — and was quite specific about his reservations: "I cannot support a piece of legislation that takes away insurance from tens of millions of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Nevadans."
Google will stop scanning emails to target ads, "one of the most controversial advertising formats," Bloomberg reports. Google got here in a very roundabout way: The decision was driven by the cloud division which felt it needed to address confusion by some corporate customers — whose mails have never been sniffed, like those of free users. So the masses get a privacy perk because Google wants to "make it unambiguous." #GmailScanningAds
Anthem has settled a case brought on behalf of 79 million people whose personal information was hacked for $115 million. It is said to be the largest settlement ever for a data breach, but nobody's going to get rich: The money will go for two years of credit monitoring or up to $50 cash for victims who already have such a service. #AnthemDataBreach
SpaceX is halfway through a record-setting attempt to launch and land two different rockets in 48 hours, the most rapid launch sequence ever. They are on a tear: Friday's mission, with a used first-stage Falcon rocket, was the company's eighth this year — as many as in all of 2016. Round two is scheduled for Sunday. #SpaceXDoubleFeature
They said "cheese" for the last time: One of the CME's most obscure open-outcry auctions came to an end. This particular daily 10-minute shoutfest established the spot price for cheddar, which has become the benchmark for 80% of the nation's wholesale transactions for all cheese. The Wall Street Journal reports it's going electronic, of course.
