Versius: A Four-Year Journey of getting patients minimal access surgery
Versius: A Four-Year Journey of getting patients minimal access surgery
Rajesh P.V, General Manager, AMEA
May marked a significant milestone for Versius and the CMR team across Asia, the Middle East and Africa (AMEA) as we celebrated four years since the first operations were performed with Versius at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital & Research Centre in Pune, India. Since then, we’ve been privileged to be able to bring Versius to more hospitals across the AMEA region. I would like to use this milestone to reflect on the incredible progress we have made in the past four years.
First and foremost, I am thrilled with the success we have had to date across the region. AMEA is one of the fastest growing regions for medical devices, with a high demand for new technologies to deliver the best surgical care to patients. I am proud that surgeons have placed significant trust in Versius and CMR across the region and these installations have paved the way for more patients to experience the many benefits of minimal access surgery.
A key measure of our success in AMEA lies in the number of procedures conducted using Versius. This is a testament to the widespread adoption and trust in our next-generation surgical technology, and our dedicated teams and partners working day in and day out. To date, we have performed a wide range of complex procedures, such as radical prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy, radical cystectomy, low anterior resection, distal pancreatectomy, ventral hernia, as well as robotic whipples, distal pancreatectomy, and lobectomies – demonstrating the versatility of Versius across a range of surgical specialties.
We are honoured to have renowned Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) in the region who have embraced Versius and who have contributed to its success. Dr Pradeep Chowbey (Max Institute), Dr Amr Fergany (International Hospital of Urology and Nephrology), Dr Subhash Khanna (Swagat Hospital), Dr Rehan Mohsin (Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation), Dr Hatem Moussa (American Hospital Dubai), Dr Raj Nagarkar (HCG Manavata), Dr Suraj Pawar (Kolhapur Cancer Centre), Dr Shailesh Puntambekar (Galaxy) and Dr Mohammed Diaa Sarhan (International Hospital of Urology and Nephrology), are among the esteemed KOLs utilizing Versius in their surgical practice. Their advocacy has played a crucial role in driving the adoption of Versius in AMEA, and we are grateful for their expertise and support. These, along with all the other incredible surgeons and surgical teams we work with and the partnerships we have with our hospital partners have been instrumental in our journey. Centres such as the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) in Pakistan, who performed their first 100 cases within 2 months of introducing Versius and have now completed over 1,400 cases using Versius, demonstrating the suitability of Versius for high-volume procedure loads.
Across AMEA, we have seen widespread use of Versius across multiple surgical specialties. Urology accounts for the majority of cases, followed closely by general surgery, and then an even spread between gynaecology, bariatric, colorectal, and thoracic surgeries. This distribution of procedures by specialty demonstrates the broad applicability of Versius and its potential to transform various surgical specialties.
We are committed to clinical excellence, with a number of highly skilled surgeons from AMEA actively supporting our global proficiency-based training program as preceptors. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety and performance whilst supporting clinical research. This commitment is shared by our partners, surgeons, and the entire healthcare community in the AMEA region.
As we reflect on the remarkable achievements of the past four years, it is clear that the market potential for Versius in AMEA is vast. With our solid foundation, experience, and proven track record, we are well-positioned to seize these opportunities and continue transforming surgical outcomes in the AMEA region with Versius.
It has been an absolute honour to be a part of the roll out of Versius across AMEA. The past four years have been filled with remarkable achievements, and I am excited about the future that lies ahead. Together with our partners, KOLs, and the surgical community, we are poised to further revolutionize surgical care and improve patient outcomes. Here's to another four years of extraordinary progress and innovation with Versius.

Versius in the Hunterian!
Are you interested in seeing the next-generation surgical robotic system Versius, and learning more about the history of surgery as well as what the future of surgery looks like? Well, now you can!
Last month the Royal College of Surgeons of England’s Hunterian Museum reopened after a 6-year closure. The newly revamped museum is free to visit and explores the history of surgery from the gruesome barber-surgeons origins of the Middle Ages, to the innovative, modern practices such as robotic-assisted surgery followed in many parts of the world today.
The inclusion of Versius in the collection highlights the impact robotic surgery has had in modern treatment methods, and the vital role Versius plays in making minimal access surgery more accessible for patients and surgeons globally.
You can find Versius in the Modern Surgery room which looks at how modern surgery continues to respond to the challenges of a complex world, scientific advances from the 20th and 21st centuries, and how they have transformed the way we understand and operate on the human body.

Versius milestones
Throughout the past month, more hospitals have celebrated key milestones with Versius – representing more patients around the world getting access to the benefits of robotic-assisted minimal access surgery.
In Pakistan, the team at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) have now surpassed 1,400 cases performed using Versius. Argenteuil CENTRE HOSPITALIER VICTOR DUPOUY , who use Versius across Colorectal, Upper GI, Urology, Gynaecology and Thoracic surgery, became the first hospital in France to reach 200 cases performed with Versius.
Meanwhile in the UK, the thoracic team at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust , one of world’s leading cardiothoracic hospitals and the UK’s main heart and lung transplant centre, have completed the UK’s first Thoracic cases using Versius. The team at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust , who were the first in England to install Versius in 2019 – and use the system across gynaecology, colorectal, urology and general/upper GI surgery – have celebrated their 500-case milestone.
Congratulations to all of our partners around the world that have brought minimal access surgery to more patients globally with Versius, we look forward to celebrating your next milestones!
