“Pole and line fishing is a beautiful art. It is a skill that not many have. It takes talent to go out there and find the fish,” says Michelle Bellinger , Chief Executive Officer at tuna trading company ICV Africa.

In August 2024, a component of the South African Albacore Pole and Line Tuna fishery, represented by ICV AFRICA , became the first to achieve MSC certification following participation in the In-Transition to MSC (ITM) program.

It followed four years of hard work to make the improvements needed to meet the MSC Fisheries Standard. These included collaborations to implement data collection and to ensure that fishers are able to limit interactions with endangered, threatened and protected (ETP) species.

“The reason I wanted to achieve MSC certification is because I want to be able to show to our customers that we are compliant, that we are at that level, and that we’re doing what we need to,” adds Bellinger.

Beautifully captured on film, this is their story. **WATCH NOW**
