Virtual Wards: the care of a hospital, the comfort of home in Ireland

Virtual Wards: the care of a hospital, the comfort of home in Ireland

As someone who is passionate about the impact of virtual wards and of Irish heritage, it is doubly exciting that the national health service in Ireland is embarking on a programme for the country, that saw the first acute virtual wards open this week.

These Virtual Wards will be the first of their kind in the Irish healthcare system

First hospitals to host the new service

The first two sites are St Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin and University Hospital Limerick. These two, major hospitals are beginning with Respiratory and Cardiology pathways across fifty virtual ward beds, ahead of further expansion plans.

This will include the following conditions, for Respiratory -

Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Bronchiectasis, COPD with Pneumonia and COPD with Bronchiectasis and

and for Cardiology -

Heart Failure, Atrial Fibrillation, patients awaiting cardiac tests and procedures and after having a non-surgical treatment of a blockage in a coronary artery to restore blood flow to the heart (post percutaneous coronary intervention or PCI).

The programme is led by Professor Richard Greene Greene Richard Chief Clinical Information Officer and Deirdre McNamara Director of Strategic Programmes.

Professor Greene explains -

Virtual wards are a new health innovation that has emerged internationally, which supports the remote care of patients who would otherwise be in a hospital bed

There’s an excellent slide pack below, explaining how the programme will work.

Deirdre McNamara adds:

Virtual wards herald a new and exciting phase of the digital transformation of our health service. They support the delivery of care in the right place, at the right time. The service will start this month and will be scaled up, supporting increased in-hospital bed capacity, which will reduce pressure on the health system over time.”

In announcing the new programme, the Irish Minister of Health, Stephen Donnelly said, in December -

Expansion of virtual services and the effective utilisation of digital technology in healthcare needs to happen. […] I am delighted to see this Programme established and supported by clinicians at all levels in our health service. The technology-enabled scheme also supports patients’ preferences for better integrated services, closer, or indeed in their own homes

My parents met in Dublin and I was named after the ancient capital of Ireland. I’ve such fond memories of long summers spent there as a child, often by the seaside in Greystones, Dun Laoghaire and the west of Ireland with my cousins, aunties, uncles and grandparents.

Launching the new service

There is a short video, made at the recent launch event, that is well worth a watch -

And here is more from the HSE team -

HSE release on the launch

University Hospital Limerick

Doccla , the leading virtual hospital provider in Europe, and my client, has been awarded the tender for provision of the technology for the national Virtual Ward programme by the Health Service Executive, known as HSE.

Paul Murphy , the Doccla senior strategic partnerships manager for Ireland told me -

We’re so proud to join the HSE in launching Ireland's first acute virtual wards at St. Vincent’s University Hospital and University Hospital Limerick. This initiative is a significant milestone in Irish healthcare, reflecting extensive effort and promising clear benefits for both the health service and patients.
Paul Murphy, from the team at Doccla

Paul continues -

I've met with the teams at both sites, and they are excited to be part of this groundbreaking project.

Rhiannon Thomas and Joe Pringle have been leading delivery with the hospital teams in Ireland and passed on some examples of amazing patient feedback already, in this first week of service. One of the very first people to benefit for the tech enabled home care model at Limerick, said to the team that with her newly diagnosed health condition she was getting quite worried and now feels so much happier and less stressed that she is being looked after.

I'm so thankful and relieved to be on this trial. I don't have to worry about my heart or my BP dropping as that is taken care of for me. I have slept through the night for the first time in a long time!

We know how important sleep is for recovery, and there are so many other benefits from being in a home environment, with your social network, ability to mobilise and choose food that appeals to you, much lower risk of infections or deconditioning. This message has been nicely captured in the Irish programme's strapline -

Doccla began when its co-founder Martin Ratz had a heart attack at an early age and experienced the gap between hospital care and home. Martin said -

We are thrilled to partner with the HSE in launching the first acute Virtual Wards in Ireland. Our proven virtual ward technology will support HSE in delivering efficient, high-quality care, and improving patient outcomes

The ambition is to scale the virtual ward capacity quite quickly in number, and also across other pathways. to have them available in every significant health setting. There will be a full evaluation to inform large scale deployment of the model.

At the recent HSE Spark Summit, Department of Health secretary general Robert Watt described this expansion -

Over the next year or 18 months we should have virtual wards in every significant setting, freeing up beds and discharging people faster. As we all know, people prefer to be at home in their own bed, with friends and family nearby. If we can do that safely and securely, that in itself will transform the care we provide.

Ambitious plans for virtual wards across Ireland using Doccla RPM platform

In neat timing, just last week the team at Doccla launched it's new offer, open to all, the Virtual Ward Network, and warmly welcomes Irish health staff.

This is an online community to link up staff in health services who are advancing virtual wards. It is a place to access best practice examples and link to peers who are working in the same area through webinars, bulletins and in person events. It is completely free to join and there is more at this link, please do join if you work in this space and share widely across your network

Exciting times ahead and I will certainly be keeping a close eye on the progress as Ireland flies the flag for Virtual Wards.
