Combining industry leading knowledge and expertise creates the foundation for great future achievements. Today we in the Volvo Group and NVIDIA have announced that we together will develop the fully autonomous transport solutions of tomorrow.

High-level automation will redefine the transport industry. It will deliver clear benefits to our customers and society when it comes to safety, productivity and energy efficiency. We have already demonstrated self-driving trucks and construction equipment operating in quarries, underground mines and logistics hubs.

The next step is developing autonomous transport solutions for public roads– including fully autonomous trucks driving on the highway. Here the traffic environment is much more complex. We have therefore decided to partner with the leading company when it comes to automated driving system built on accelerated computing and artificial intelligence, NVIDIA, based in Santa Clara, Silicon Valley. The result will be a scalable Autonomous Driving System that is planned to be used first in commercial pilots and later in commercial offerings from the Volvo Group.

When you remove the driver, you need to secure that the vehicle can handle every situation on its own. It must be able to steer and brake even if the primary steering and braking system fails. You need to know the maximum brake performance at any given time and road condition and you need to know the maximum possible speed to manage a curvature without roll-over, just to mention a few demands. After almost 100 years in the business, we have extensive expertise and knowledge in this area.
