New Laws & Rules in Ontario This December

2 Month GST-Relief

The Department of Finance recently announced that from December 14, 2024 to February 15, 2025, Canadians will receive a Goods and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) break. This tax break will apply to groceries, restaurant meals, drinks, snacks, children's clothing, and more.

Mortgage Reforms

The federal government introduced mortgage reforms to make homeownership more accessible, especially for millennials and Gen Z. Starting December 15, these changes will include raising the insured mortgage cap to $1.5 million and expanding 30-year mortgage amortization eligibility for first-time buyers and those purchasing new builds, aiming to lower monthly payments and reflect current housing prices.

New Registration for PSWs

Ontario has introduced a new registration system for personal support workers (PSWs) through the Health and Supportive Care Providers Oversight Authority (HSCPOA) to improve oversight and patient confidence in healthcare. Starting December 1, PSWs can register to receive standardized training, appear in a public directory, and display a quality mark on their IDs to assure patients and employers of their qualifications

Enacting Changes to Rules of Civil Procedure

Starting December 1, Ontario will require parties in court cases to file a signed certificate of authenticity for factums or expert reports submitted during trials, appeals, or judicial reviews. This ensures the cited authorities are authentic, addressing concerns about the growing use of artificial intelligence in legal research.
