Wallem Seafarer Series: Juniel Baquial

Name: Juniel Baquial

Nationality: Filipino

Role: Chief Officer

With a family history in maritime going back generations, the call to a life at sea runs in my blood. Most recently, with my uncles and cousins all being seafarers, it was always my ambition to follow in their footsteps – and after over a decade at sea I understand the love of the industry they speak so passionately of.

Life at sea is wonderfully unique and I’ve learnt so many life skills being a seafarer, from technical and practical abilities but more importantly interpersonal skills such as team building, resilience, and dedication. It isn’t without its challenges as I miss out on family events - including that I have recently become a father and am absent for some of my daughters’ milestones. During my downtime at sea, I keep myself busy with sports and fitness; I am a very keen basketball player. I also spend time brushing up on my work-related skills which I always encourage junior members to do as well.

I’m not only competitive personally but also professionally, which is why Wallem is the perfect fit for me. I’m incredibly proud to be part of a shipmanagement company with a long and distinguished history of seafaring. The opportunities and support that Wallem has provided to me, particularly in crew welfare and safety is second to none. Wallem empowers and challenges me to be the best seafarer and my ambition is to progress through the ranks at Wallem and become a captain. I know this would bring my loved ones at home great pride, as I will be the first in my family to reach such a prestigious position.

I would recommend becoming a seafarer to those who are hard workers and want to make a difference to their team members. It’s a tough life but the rewards, personally and professionally, make it absolutely worthwhile!
