Want to migrate from legacy TDM tooling?
Since I left CA Technologies (which was subsequently acquired by Broadcom) and set up my latest start-up specializing in test data and generation, I’ve spoken to numerous organisations seeking alternatives to their legacy TDM tools.
5 years since I co-founded Curiosity, common concerns with legacy TDM tools seem to be:
1. Feeling trapped by unsustainable licensing models and expensive renewals;
2. Disappointment with the level and quality of technical support;
3. Frustration with current functionality and concerns about the pace of feature development.
At Curiosity, we believe we offer a value-added, viable alternative to legacy TDM tooling, along with migration plans and expert technical support to enable a smooth and rapid roll-out. This article discusses how and why we believe you should talk to us about migrating to Test Data Automation.
Test Data Automation
Test Data Automation offers you a complete and cutting-edge test data toolkit, built on the Curiosity team’s 25+ year history in test data innovation. Re-entering the market in 2017, we’ve leveraged modern technologies and decades-long experience to build a scalable, extendable solution, designed for the world of parallelized development, test automation, and CI/CD.
Test Data Automation offers an extensive set of integrated test data utilities, which can be triggered “just in time” by engineers, automated tests, CI/CD pipelines, and more. This includes synthetic data generation, masking, and subsetting, alongside data virtualisation, orchestration, cloning, and allocation. Together, these flexible utilities provide the tools needed to find, make and allocate complete and compliant data on-the-fly during rigorous testing and rapid development
Migrating from legacy TDM tooling to Test Data Automation
Test Data Automation further comes equipped with a migration plan for legacy TDM users, designed to shorten time-to-value, avoid downtime, and minimize rework.
The migration falls into two stages, during which Curiosity’s expert support team will work closely with you. The first phase recreates your existing test data jobs in Test Data Automation, working quickly to implement an (almost) like-for-like swap. Wherever possible, we will import existing files, rules and configurations to repurpose your TDM jobs at speed. This can include importing automated workflows, seed tables and configuration files.

Phase 2 then focuses on integrating your newly-created test data jobs within your broader ecosystem. This includes test automation frameworks, self-service data provisioning, CI/CD integration and test management software. Test Data Automation’s extensive range of connectors and interfaces will be used for quick and complete integration.
Once you’ve migrated and integrated your test data jobs, you can begin expanding your test data capabilities. This can include using Test Data Automation’s wide range of utilities, supported data types, and continuous product updates, maximizing the ROI of your test data tools and techniques.
A supportive team of “trusted partners”
In Test Data Automation, you will not only be migrating to a tool with cutting-edge capabilities; you will be partnering with a team of experts who will support you closely during the migration, roll-out and beyond.
Curiosity’s team offers you a rare combination of project experience, technological expertise, and a history of innovation. Most of our team worked with me at Grid-Tools and/or CA Technologies (now Broadcom), helping to build a range of test data tools. Yet, Curiosity’s history as test data pioneers stretches even further than that, to 1995, when Curiosity’s CFO Paul Blundell and I co-founded the first of four start-ups specializing in testing and data.
This team of experts are keen to discuss your migration from legacy TDM tooling. You can simply book a meeting with a Curiosity expert to start scoping and planning your migration, or please feel free to drop me a LinkedIn message or comment.

As of 07/12/2022, 43% of the Curiosity team worked together at Grid-Tools, while more than half (53%) worked together at Grid-Tools and/or CA Technologies.
