Wastewater Treatment/Pollution and Its Impact on Our Waters.

Hanorado G. S. Ltd is constructing a wastewater treatment plant in Ikorodu Lagos. When it is complete it will treat over 1350 cubic meters of wastewater every day. This would save our environment 0.5 million cubic meters of wastewater that could have added to the pollution of our underground aquifers and the Lagos Lagoon every year.

The Lagos lagoon is a large water body stretching over 6000 square kilometers in surface area from the east to the west of Lagos in Nigeria and eventually discharges into the Atlantic Ocean via the Lagos harbour. This water body serves as means of livelihood to many locals who are fisher men living mostly in isolated shoreline areas of the over 20 million densely populated Lagos.  Unfortunately, this lagoon is a discharge outfall for heavy urban and industrial wastewater pollution through numerous drainage canals that empties daily into it from the hinterlands. If every community and industry treats its wastewater in the city of Lagos to meet environmentally accepted standards, this huge water body and its potential biodiversity would be of huge economic value both to the government and its citizenry.

Wastewater pollution still remains a great challenge to the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. Sensitization of the public is key. The government can do more. Solving this one problem of wastewater pollution would reduce diseases, boost fishery, create massive employment opportunities and even generate a much needed foreign exchange through exports. This can further help reverse the current account deficit presently being experienced by Nigeria.
