The Way I Approach Connections

The Way I Approach Connections

Sometimes in the course of history you do something that changes the very foundation of someone’s belief in a system governed by absolutes. In this case, it was me changing how users experienced LinkedIn. What? You thought maybe I was going to talk about politics or pandemic related vaccines or how to create the ultimate vanilla iced frappe. Pfft. Well, this is my article so I’m going to write it about me.

Anyway…course changing history thing…yeah, let’s proceed.

Some of you may know that I have a love / hate relationship with LinkedIn. If you didn’t know that, well, you do now. I love connecting with people. I hate when they immediately respond with some pitch. And it always seems to be “Hey how about we schedule a 30 minute discovery call.” And my response is always the same… “F-off”.

Well maybe not in those words.

I try to be diplomatically sarcastic. But honestly, people don’t seem to understand sarcasm nowadays…so those two words kind of sums it all up in the most simplistic fashion.

So I figured I would do something different. To me, being angry at someone for not understanding the rules was not fair. Well not to me. I mean why should I be the one constantly screaming obscenities at a connection half way across the globe because they don’t understand how to build a real connection. Seriously, there’s got to be some guru teaching these people the same useless template…oh, and honestly…he deserves a throat punch.

Over the last year I must’ve received over 300 pitches. Of which about 4 were different. Yeah…about that guru…make it a double throat punch.

But there was one pitch that put me over the edge. That made me cringe to the very core in how I would forever use LinkedIn. Oh, the pitch started out with all the general niceties. Hi, how are you? I see you do this and that. Good for you. And that’s where it should have stopped. But sadly for them it didn’t. And fortunately this was the very moment I took action. You see this is where Tad (and no, names have not been changed to protect the guilty) made his mistake.

Tad sent this me… “I’ve been making 30 second elevator pitch videos for my new connections to use for years as a gift for being connected, no charge. Takes 15 minutes if you’re interested.

My response to Tad was… “Why does a 30 second video require 15 minutes of my time? I can make my own 30 second video and have 14-1/2 minutes left to go work on something else.

To which Tad unfriended and blocked me. I think I cried for like .0002 microseconds.

But I got over it. And it inspired me.

Not to create a 30 second video in 15 minutes, but to create a 15 second video in 15 seconds.

Yeah, I conquered common sense and saved a bunch of time. So over the next 30 days I set into motion my idea.

Then I tested it. And tested. And tested some more. And repeated the testing over 700 connections.

I was averaging 23 new connections a day, so yeah…I got some feedback to share.

Now before I reveal the results of my glorious history changing way of working LinkedIn…let me showcase to you my 15 second video and what I send to people after connecting.

Hey hey…

I recorded a quick 15 second video

…don’t worry I’m not pitching anything.

(I so dislike those people too)

Just wanted to introduce myself and wish you well.

Now, after about 300 videos in, I made 2 tweaks to my message.

1) I changed the second hey to their name

2) I added a transcript of the video.

Hey {first name}

I recorded a quick 15 second video

…don’t worry I’m not pitching anything.

(I so dislike those people too)

Just wanted to introduce myself and wish you well.

FYI: the transcript to my 15 second video is...

“Hi, this is Rob Anspach and I want to say thanks for the connection.

I appreciate you and look forward to having an awesome conversation with you.

Have a great day.”

The reason I added their name is it became even more personalized. And two, depending on their settings or country they were viewing the message from, the video could have been rendered non-viewable. So the transcript gave them a way to read my intentions.

After the first dozen connections that I sent my video intro to…the feedback was incredible. And honestly I thought I hit a grand slam home run. And as I was running the bases. Some guy way out in left field let me have it. And screamed, “A bloody YouTube video? That wasn’t even recorded today.

And I stopped dead in my tracks.

What the heck? So I respond… “Yes a YouTube video…and it was recorded today.

Oh, my bad.” he responds.

Then hundreds of connections went by. Some not responding to my video. Some saying how refreshing and unique it was. Some saying it was the best introduction they ever received. Some even inviting me onto their podcasts to talk about my story.

But then I’m reminded that I can’t please everyone, and everyone has their opinion on how the world views absolutes.

If you're going to do a video intro why not do individual ones? I don't really see the point otherwise.” ~ Rebecca P

To which “F-off” would have been the appropriate response. But being that I’m diplomatically sarcastic I answered with… “Well it works for me. And I’ve gotten lots of praise and thanks. But I can’t please everyone.”

Again, unfriended and blocked. No tears this time.

A second later received this from Ian… “Nice touch Rob”.

Then I got one from Cody … “Thanks for the video. Seems like a good way to set yourself apart.”

And Deanna chimed in… “Love the video Rob. Yes those cold call sales PMs are my biggest pet peeve here.

Yes, yes…I live for the praise. Keep it coming.

Yet, I know that the naysayers will constantly harp on why I choose a YouTube video over a live video. For me it’s about simplicity. Sure a personalized live video is always considered better when trying to build trust and interaction. However, recording 20 videos a day with individualized messages would exhaust me and take away from what I’m really good at. And that’s helping my clients.

So for me, a non-pitch message that I can send to new connections showing them the best of me and how I make LinkedIn work…well, that’s how I change someone’s foundation and their belief in templates and pitches.

I’m not a guru. And I can’t please everyone.

And absolutely no, I don’t believe that every connection will ever produce a client relationship. But those who like what I do will gravitate a little closer and pay attention. And maybe those absolutes they hold so tight will loosen and they will embrace a different way of approaching future connections.

Peace Out.
