WC 24/10/21 AWS Whats New

Welcome to another week of updates from the world of AWS. Whether you’re just starting your cloud journey or you’re a seasoned pro, there’s something here for everyone. Let’s dive into what’s new and why it matters to you.

Security and Compliance Enhancements

This week, AWS has introduced several updates aimed at bolstering security and compliance. AWS Firewall Manager now supports retrofitting existing AWS WAF WebACLs. This means you can centrally create policies that add baseline rule sets to your existing WAF WebACLs, ensuring consistent protection across your resources without disrupting custom rule sets. This is particularly useful for rapidly deploying standard WAF rules during or after a security event, making your security management more efficient and robust.

Billing and Cost Management

Managing your AWS bills just got easier. AWS now accepts partial card payments, allowing you to split your monthly bill into smaller, more manageable payments. This flexibility can help businesses better manage their cash flow and avoid the hassle of paying the entire bill at once. Simply log into your AWS Billing Console, select the invoice, choose your card, and make a partial payment. It’s that simple!

Monitoring and Analytics

Amazon CloudWatch has rolled out improvements to its log pattern analysis and anomaly detection features. The new named tokens make results easier to read, and the quota for Log Anomaly detectors has been significantly increased. This means you can now monitor and analyse your logs more effectively, identifying issues faster and ensuring your applications run smoothly.

Database Enhancements

Amazon Aurora Global Database now supports tagging global clusters, making it easier to organise and track your AWS costs. This update allows you to apply tags at various levels, from the global cluster down to individual database instances. Additionally, Amazon RDS for Oracle now supports Oracle Application Express (APEX) Version 24.1, enabling developers to build applications entirely within their web browser.

Storage Solutions

AWS Storage Gateway is now available in the AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region, expanding its reach and enabling more customers to deploy and manage hybrid cloud storage for their on-premises workloads. This service provides on-premises applications with access to virtually unlimited storage in the cloud, making it ideal for backup, archiving, and low-latency access to cloud data.

Developer Tools and Services

AWS Lambda has introduced support for custom serializers with Java runtimes, allowing you to replace the default Java object serialization library with a custom-defined serializer. This flexibility is crucial for adapting Lambda functions to specific event formats, enhancing compatibility and performance.

AI and Machine Learning

AWS has announced an update to the Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) for better scalability with AI/ML applications. The new “EFA-only” interface decouples EFA from the Elastic Network Adapter (ENA), allowing you to scale your compute clusters without straining your private IPv4 address space. This update is particularly beneficial for large-scale AI/ML model training jobs, improving performance and reducing routing challenges.

Application Development and Management

Amazon Connect now offers screen sharing capabilities, enhancing customer support and sales interactions. This feature allows agents to quickly understand and resolve customer issues by sharing their screens during web and video calls. It’s available in multiple regions, ensuring a wide reach for improved customer experiences.

New Regional Availability

Several AWS services have expanded their regional availability. AWS WAF Bot and Fraud Control RuleGroup is now available in six additional regions, providing comprehensive security for web applications, APIs, and mobile apps. AWS Storage Gateway and AWS Control Tower have also expanded to new regions, offering more customers access to these powerful tools.

That’s all for this week! These new features and enhancements are designed to make your cloud journey smoother, more secure, and more efficient. Whether you’re managing costs, enhancing security, or scaling your applications, AWS continues to provide the tools and services you need to succeed.
