"We are hiring"s message is almost everywhere. Is the ‘Great Resignation’ here?
By Stanley Desmoulins, JD, MBA
In the first 2 weeks of June 2021, we have seen more people vaccinated, restrictions lifted, and economies improve in many western countries. Many people are asking themselves if it is now a good time for people to make a career move or not?
Covid-19 has demonstrated that people should not define themselves by their work. It has also shown that we cannot control or predict with certainty the job market evolution. However, we can decide to stay or leave a job to find a better suited one. This is not an always easy decision when we have family responsibilities or bills to take care of. In our job, we need to be happy, feel we provide value to the institution and have our contribution recognized and valued.
There is not a good time to leave a job or change a career. There are some questions one must ask himself or herself: Can I afford this decision now? Am I willing to take those risks now? With the answers, the decision is yours. Your career belongs to you. Covid-19 has proven that no one is irreplaceable in an institution. Try to take the maximum control you can. At the end, take responsibility for your decision. If it was a good one: enjoy it to the fullest. If it is not, at least you have learnt something.

Covid-19 reminded us to value more happiness, family, friends and well-being overall other things. As the job market can change any time, we only must be prepared by doing what we like and keep learning both what we like and what we dislike. With this mentality, we will always have a place to work no matter if we stay at our current job or move to a new one.
