Are we pursuing our calling too late?
In my recent talk with prof. Kira Schabram and prof. Jordan Nielsen , I got to know that our willingness to live according to our true calling is increasing over a lifespan and usually reaches a breakpoint quite late in our career. That's when we get that second wind to finally do what we were always supposed to do.
This made me think, why are we so reluctant to start earlier. Is it that hard, or scary to live according to your purpose?
One explanation could be, that we are scared to choose a more meaningful career path as it might influence our financial situation. In my recent study, 40% of respondents (aged 26-45) confirmed that they won't follow their passion due to financial constraints.
So, what changes later in our careers that we finally decide to give it a go? Do we have some savings to use as backup? Maybe we have less constraints - no mortgage, kids living on their own? Maybe - it's now or never type of situation? :)
Here, I'd like to invite you to take a different perspective on this - to start living closer to your purpose, to have a work that brings you more meaning, you don't necessarily need to make a dramatic change in your life.
In my case, starting a training career in a country where the supply of trainers was way higher than a demand from clients was certainty such a dramatic decision. So I didn't do that in the beginning. Instead, I focused on creating content, exploring some other ways to provide training, while having a side job as a researcher, to pay my bills. Being free to do whatever I want, allowed me to focus on one thing that busy trainers usually don't have time to - building personal brand. This eventually resulted in enough training requests, that I didn't need a supportive job anymore.

In case you want to find more meaning in your day job - the approach can be similiar. You can change a small thing in what you do to make it more meaningful. E.g. if you find lots of energy in helping other people, how about becoming the best mentor or buddy that ever was in your organization? You can search for more meaningful projects, choose a bit more tasks that you find exciting, or you can't wait to learn about. This small, safe way to focus on purpose and meaning will certainly be refreshing. So. Would you give it a go next week?
Let me know what do you think about this insight! How do you think we could pursue calling earlier in the career? What small steps should bring us closer?
If you found this insight valuable, I highly recommend you to listen to the full interview I had with Kira and Jordan. We covered many more insights into how do we work and what is the relationship between job, career, and calling. It's available here:
