A Week After the Hispanic Leadership Summit 2024
Last week’s Hispanic Leadership Summit brought together over 650 leaders from the public, private, and non-profit sectors. The largest participation was from companies, brands, media, and leaders from small and medium-sized industries.
Given the turbulent times, as well as a highly charged recent election, we are all working to understand the implications of a changing landscape in which we see both stalled corporate diversity initiatives and the uncertainty of what a new administration will bring. But also heightened attention towards the community, both good and bad. The stakes could never be higher.
On day one, our participants were largely human resources, talent, diversity, and inclusion professionals who remain committed to their mission but are concerned that as a national and corporate priority, they face a growing body of ambivalence and growing opposition, reduced funding and the very worst, a question of its fundamental value.
All of which means that as a community, we need to make sure that we are telling the story of the Latino community proactively rather than letting others define us. Perceptions of Latinos are often far from the truth, and the data shows that we are the engine of the U.S. economy and that our purchasing power is enormous. We are driving prosperity, power and progress.
As the nation becomes more and more diverse, more and more Latino, the best way, really the only way, to engage Latino consumers authentically, is by making sure that Latinos are well represented across a company’s hierarchy. This is a matter of future growth.
On Day Two, panelists and keynote speakers shared the most recent data on Latinos, discussed current trends, and all the issues that affect Hispanics, especially as consumers. Another subject that got great attention was about recognizing that we are not a monolithic community. Communities rarely are, but Latinos have origins in 26 different countries, and our diversity spans religion, ethnicity, politics, economic status. I truly believe that our diversity strengthens us. We should not aspire to walk in locked step across many issues. But we can and do unite around the shared desire for progress. We can all agree on this, coalesce on this, and act on it. Here, too, misinformation and disinformation does not serve us well, while the ability to come together and own our collective narrative is our greatest instrument of power. Without a narrative rooted in fact, we are denied opportunities, investments, fair salaries — in essence, our shot at building the American Dream for ourselves and our children.

But fortunately, we can all do something about elevating the Latino narrative. And to give it structure, oxygen and energy, on Day Three we introduced the Hispanic Star Promise Pledge with a live activation with the attendees and online viewers. This Pledge involves 10 personal commitments, all designed to respectfully recognize the diversity of our community and wholeheartedly commit to being part of a united community that gives us a common front, the power of numbers, and will advance the Latino narrative in order to benefit us all.
We opened the pledge to the public and received hundreds of signatures from people who want to be part of our united community.
So at the end the HLS this year, I am determined and even optimistic. We have come far in identifying the primary issues that create barriers for our success, and in building a community of advocates who will give our narrative the credibility and momentum it deserves.
A final thought. We always hold the Hispanic Leadership Summit at the United Nations, where leaders and ambassadors from all over the world come to discuss, debate, and determine how to tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues. One can’t help but be awed by some of the complicated conversations over its 79 years and even simply by its sustained existence. In that same spirit of debate and consensus, we, too, come together to find common ground and change history.
