GLOBAL ECONOMIC PULSE (and Weekly Trade Update + Biweekly China Spotlight)

USA

Key activity indicators for the United States, including retail sales and industrial production, will be released. S&P Global PMI survey data indicates that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to rise by a robust 2.0%. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) has reduced its signaling to just one rate cut in 2024, and the strength of demand in the economy will guide policy.

Europe

The European Central Bank (ECB) cut interest rates by 25 basis points in June and is unlikely to cut rates again in July due to persistent inflation in the service sector, largely linked to elevated pay growth. Final data is expected to confirm that inflation has fallen to 2.5%, but services inflation remains at 4.1%. The Bank of England is also on hold despite better headline inflation figures, with the headline inflation meeting the target at 2.0% in June. However, annual growth in employees' core earnings is still running at 6.0%. The British King's legislative program under the new Labour Government will be under focus as second quarter corporate earnings commence.

Asia

The Third Plenum of the 20th National Congress will set the long-term economic and reform agenda. China will release major economic data, including second quarter GDP, industrial production, retail sales, and fixed asset investment, which are expected to have moderated slightly in June. The People's Bank of China is expected to keep the 1-year Medium-Term Lending Facility (MLF) rate at 2.5%. Japan's Consumer Price Index (CPI) is likely to edge up to 2.9% year-on-year in June. The government plans to offer an energy subsidy program from August to October, which will temporarily weigh on headline inflation. Japan's exports are expected to rise by 7.5% year-on-year in June. Bank Indonesia is unlikely to change rates, but there may be room for a rate cut in the fourth quarter. Indonesia's exports and imports are expected to dip in May, with the trade surplus rising slightly. India's trade deficit is expected to narrow marginally, and remittances from Filipino overseas workers are projected to rise.

Latin America

Uruguay's interest rate remains at 8.5%.

Africa

The Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector in Africa, currently employing 1.2 million full-time equivalents, is projected to more than double by 2030. The continent's BPO workforce is expected to create 1.5 million new jobs over the next six years, driven by growing global demand for outsourced customer service. South Africa, Kenya, and Egypt are poised for significant benefits, with emerging hubs like Ghana, Ethiopia, and Rwanda also positioned for substantial growth.

Weekly Trade Update

In June 2024, Brazil increased import duties on several capital goods and IT and telecommunications products by removing them from the Ex-Tarifário lists. Indonesia liberalized its labor market for foreign-qualified doctors in August 2023, removing the competency assessment and language requirements to boost its national health industry. United States of America announced significant funding for domestic manufacturers like Fiat Chrysler, General Motors, and Harley Davidson under the Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant Program:

  • DOE announces USD 250 million in funding for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US LLC under the Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant Program
  • DOE announces USD 500 million in funding for General Motors LLC under the Domestic manufacturing Conversion Grant Program
  • DOE announces USD 89 million in funding for Harley Davidson Inc under the Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant Program

In Argentina, Law 27.742 established the Incentive Regime for Large Investments (RIGI) in June 2024. Australia made customs tariff amendments and provided a substantial export finance guarantee to Fulton Market Group Australia Pty Ltd. Brazil also launched a project call for innovation in agricultural machinery and reduced minimum purchasing prices for wheat for the 2024/2025 season. Ireland added a REPowerEU chapter to its national recovery plan, focusing on energy and decarbonization. Italy's Eximbank SACE supported Pastificio Liguori with a EUR 10 million guarantee, while Japan's JBIC signed a JPY 57 billion loan agreement with Ajinomoto Co Inc.
