This week in marketing...Facebook launches "me too" product Reels, a fake funeral home gets attention, and I revive my blog.
Social media is changing. I’ve been an active part of the journey over the past few years here on LinkedIn as well as on other platforms. Some of the significant changes: it expanded to business; it’s become a powerful marketing tool; it’s made brands more human and overall it’s had a significant impact on our lives.
One of my favorite progressions has been watching it go from the idea of amassing droves of followers to creating small close-knit groups, encouraging conversation, and creating an engaged community. An evolution I’m happy to be a part of. The pandemic fueled this evolution by creating the void of connection and the need for social media platforms to communicate and connect with others in a more profound way.
These small groups have been coined “digital campfires.” I’ve been talking about this concept for years, it’s not about increasing follower counts or generating ‘likes’, it’s about creating community. There is something about this term I love, maybe it’s the idea of warmth and intimacy - read more on ‘digital campfires’ on my blog:
The proof of this trend is the growth of Discord. Discord has exploded to 150 million monthly active users. Gaming Apps in general gained immense popularity during the pandemic. At the height of the Among Us craze (my daughter included) it was estimated that Discord was averaging 800,000 downloads a day in September (credit: AppAnnie).
If you’re not familiar with Discord, it’s an instant messaging and digital distribution platform. Users communicate with voice calls, video calls, text messaging, media and files in private chats or as part of communities called "servers". Servers are a collection of persistent chat rooms and voice chat channels.
What's New in Social
Facebook launched TikTok-like Reels
From Facebook:
We’re bringing short form, entertaining video experiences and tools that have inspired creators on Instagram to more creators and audiences on the Facebook app.
With the ability to create reels and have their Instagram reels suggested to people on Facebook, creators — whether they’re just starting out or already have a large following — will have more ways to express themselves, grow their communities and reach new audiences.
Recommended by LinkedIn
Reels on Facebook can consist of music, audio, effects and more. You can find them in News Feed or in Groups, and when viewing a reel on Facebook, you can easily follow the creator directly from the video, like and comment on it, or share it with friends.
As always, when a new feature launches on a social platform, it gets the most reach. Plan to get your brand on reels and take advantage of the opportunity now.

What's Trending
This “Don’t get vaccinated” truck touting ‘Wilmore funeral home’ has been making appearance around North Carolina the last week. It turns out it’s a stunt but not by the funeral home, it doesn’t exist.
Who’s behind it? An ad agency helping to promote vaccines and combatting the pandemic.
Attention getting? Yes. Effective? Apparently yes. The health clinic linked to the fake funeral home site, StarMed, saw a 22% increase in COVID-19 vaccination appointments compared to the week prior. Nicely done BooneOakley.

3yThe funeral home truck was a great idea, until...people discovered that it was not from an actual funeral home. I wish someone had partnered with an actual funeral home for this. In this world filled with misinformation, it's important to be 100% authentic and upfront about the messages we put out. While I'm glad it may have been correlated to increased vax rates, I'm guessing it also gave some of the non-vax crowd yet another reason to say that we're being misled or flat out lied to for some political or profit seeking reason.

3yGr8 insight... Short vids/ reels whatever u call them r here to stay. With countries like India banning Tik Tok it created opportunities for others including YouTube, MX Player and now FB. I feel the next level of marketing will come through reels or short videos where followers can post something unique or just share their love for brand using short vids or reels and post them in status or their page in social media accounts. You are aware of ice bucket challenge. Imagine doing a particular action or challenge for a product as passive advertising. Its already used by film industry. Recently a Bollywood song released in India (Param Sundari) had the heroine asking viewers and followers to do a short dance step in their own style and upload on social media app. Not only videoes were uploaded on the app but also other video sharing websites like YouTube. The result was song became an instant hit.
