This week in process excellence
Operational excellence (OPEX) is intrinsically linked to revenue and profit for modern businesses.
This week, Norwegian airline Norse Atlantic Airways revealed a remarkable revenue surge of 97 percent in Q1 2024, driven by a truly impressive OPEX performance. Achieving a flawless record, it completed 100 percent of its planned flights during the quarter, transporting 201,462 passengers – an 83 percent increase over Q1 2023.
“The first quarter has shown major improvement on all metrics compared to the first quarter of the previous year,” commented Bjorn Tore Larsen , CEO and founder of Norse Atlantic Airways. “ASK [available seat kilometers] was up about 72 percent year-on-year, and load factors increased by 19 percentage points with improved revenues per passenger.”

Tactical planning played a key role in these OPEX achievements; Norse Atlantic developed seasonal strategies with more emphasis on holiday destinations and charters. As a result, it managed a record-high number of charter flights during the quarter. It aims to refine this strategy further for next winter, with several longer-term contracts secured or under negotiation. The firm is also looking forward to the busiest summer season in its history with an aircraft capacity growth of 20 percent.
OPEX has been integral to Norse Atlantic’s recent triumphs, highlighting its importance for business success. No surprise then that organizations of all shapes and sizes are continuing to prioritize their positions with OPEX-focused leadership hires. One of the latest firms to take this step is a global solution provider for the medical, aviation and energy sectors Lincotek Group . It announced this week that it has appointed Tony Gascon as the new head of global OPEX to strengthen the implementation of its OPEX roadmap, increase efficiency, and support growth. With more than 27 years of operations experience, Gascon aims to help support the organization’s ambitious plans to grow its presence in the global market.
