AI in journalism: how would public trust in the news be affected?

According to YouGov poll in the UK, few Britons think the positives would outweigh the negatives – although there are some tasks they tend to think it would be ok to allow AI to do.

➽ Humans instil more trust than AI in the media sphere, stating that “around half of Britons say they would trust a news article written by a human journalist and overseen by a human editor. Replacing [either a journalist or an editor] with an AI reduced trust to about a quarter; replacing both with AI reduced it to just one in eight.”

AI is already reshaping newsrooms, AP study finds

A new study from The Associated Press reveals that generative artificial intelligence is already reshaping newsroom roles and workflow.

➽ Nearly 70% of newsroom staffers from various backgrounds and organizations surveyed in December say they’re using the technology for crafting social media posts, newsletters, and headlines, translating and transcribing interviews, and writing story drafts, among other uses. One-fifth said they’d used generative AI for multimedia, including social graphics and videos.

TollBit is building a marketplace between AI companies and media outlets to broker IP licensing deals.

TollBit, co-founded by Toast alumni Olivia Joslin and Toshit Panigrahi, basically lets publishers make their verified content available to AI companies, for a fee. Those fees can be dynamic — based on keyword prompt trends, for example — with TollBit providing both sides with pricing insights.

➽ It claims that a publisher can get on the platform with just about 15 minutes of IT integration, and that it's already signed some up (without providing names). Moreover, it believes that a third-party will be able to provide valuable usage analytics to companies that instead sign "traditional" licensing agreements.

How People Are Really Using GenAI

There are many use cases for generative AI, spanning a vast number of areas of domestic and work life. Filtered technologies found that the use of this technology is as wide-ranging as the problems we encounter in our lives.

➽ The 100 categories they identified can be divided into six top-level themes, which give an immediate sense of what generative AI is being used for: Technical Assistance & Troubleshooting (23%), Content Creation & Editing (22%), Personal & Professional Support (17%), Learning & Education (15%), Creativity & Recreation (13%), Research, Analysis & Decision Making (10%).

When Facebook blocks news, studies show the political risks that follow

Canada has become ground zero for Facebook's battle with governments that have enacted or are considering laws that force internet giants - primarily the social media platform's owner Meta opens new tab and Alphabet's opens new tab Google - to pay media companies for links to news published on their platforms. Facebook has blocked news sharing in Canada rather than pay, saying news holds no economic value to its business.

➽ It is seen as likely to take a similar step in Australia should Canberra try to enforce its 2021 content licencing law after Facebook said it would not extend the deals it has with news publishers there. Facebook briefly blocked news in Australia ahead of the law.

➽ Where once news posts on Facebook garnered between 5 million and 8 million views from Canadians per day, that has disappeared, according to the Media Ecosystem Observatory, a McGill University and University of Toronto project.

➽ A separate NewsGuard study conducted for Reuters found that likes, comments and shares of what it categorised as "unreliable" sources climbed to 6.9% in Canada in the 90 days after the ban, compared to 2.2% in the 90 days before.
