Weekly Whisper 160
Surround yourself with people whose eyes light up when they see you coming

Weekly Whisper 160

Andre De Shields won a TONY award at the ripe young age of 73.

In his acceptance speech he shared his three cardinal rules for longevity in the arts.

Concise, enlightening and a prophetic reminder for us all.

- Surround yourself with people whose eyes light up when they see you coming

- Slowly is the fastest way to where you want to be

- The top of one mountain is the bottom of the next, so keep climbing

How should I surround myself?

  • Be the person whose eyes light up when you see them coming.
  • Visibly with enthusiasm.
  • Are they left full or empty?
  • Energised or drained?

How should I go slow?

  • Intentionally.
  • Tiny steps at a time to build consistency.
  • Trajectory is more important than position.

How should I climb?

  • Slowly, with eyes lit up around you 😊
  • Climb your own mountain, the trips, falls and difficulties that no-one else will see
  • Keep climbing anyway

Thanks Pete Clark - one of the few benefits of getting old is that you’ve seen a lot which sometimes makes you wise and this is definitely the case with Andre - love the advice on trajectory over position.
