Nurturing Tomorrow's Innovators: A Day in the Life of an ABB Robotics Intern

Ever wondered what it's like to be a robotics intern? Step into the shoes of Jineesh Gaur as we follow him through an exciting day at our Milton Keynes office!

At ABB, our interns are more than observers - they're active contributors shaping the future of robotics. In line with this year's International Youth Day theme, "From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development," we're proud to support young innovators in their journey. How do you see internships evolving in the age of #AI and #automation?

SpringTEEN: Where Music Meets Robotics

At the recent Prague SpringTEEN event, we showcased how music and cutting-edge technology can harmonize to inspire the next generation.

From YuMi jamming on the marimba to GoFa's drum collaboration with the HAMU Percussion Ensemble, our cobots proved that the future of robotics is as much about creativity as it is about precision.

What unexpected applications of robotics have inspired you recently?

Sustainable Construction Revolution: University of Kassel's Wooden Wonders

When we think of lightweight construction, wood might not be the first material that comes to mind. Researchers at the University of Kassel el are changing that perception with the help of ABB robots.

Our robots are precision-winding and gluing thin wood veneers to create high-strength, stable, and incredibly lightweight structures. This innovation could revolutionize sustainable building extensions, allowing new floors to be added to existing buildings without demolition.

How do you see robotics contributing to sustainability in your industry?

The Future of Interaction: Natural Language Processing in Robotics

Communication is key in any relationship - including the one between humans and robots. Natural Language Processing (NLP) is bridging this gap, allowing for more natural and efficient interactions.

At ABB, we're revolutionizing human-machine interaction. Traditionally, robotics programming required humans to learn the robot's language. Now, #AI is enabling robots to learn our language, making automation more accessible to businesses of all sizes.

In collaboration with Zheijang University in China, we're demonstrating how robots can translate voice commands into concrete actions, such as arranging colored cubes as instructed. This simplification of robot programming offers significant advantages, especially for small and medium-sized companies without dedicated programmers.

We're also developing AI-powered robots that combine vision and natural language processing. These robots can handle complex tasks like picking and placing various objects - crucial capabilities across multiple industries. Soon, you'll be able to instruct robots using demonstrations, text, voice, or even video.

How do you envision NLP changing the way we interact with robots in the workplace?
