Welcome to the Project Manager Clinic - July 2023 Issue 1

Introducing the Project Manager Clinic!

Project management has been around for a very long time, but why do so many projects still go wrong? Given the training courses, Masters Degree's and other various certifications and support organisations, we have talked about this forever in many different ways with varying degree's on sustainable success. From my observations and in my experience, many project managers still don't seem to know which technique or tool to use in order to address issues and move their projects forward, but this is just one of the reasons.

I’ve been involved in project management for about 25 years and I’m continually surprised at how many people still don’t know how to apply core project management techniques and principles to various problems. These same people are often surprised when I point out the basics to guide them through to a solution. It's not that they don't know the technique in most cases, it's just that in all the throws of project land, they forget what tools they have at their disposal.

If you search #projectmanagement in Google, hundreds of articles come up but I wanted to approach this subject differently. Assuming #projectmanagers already know the theory (because there are already plenty of training resources, groups and educational organisations out there), we are going to look more holistically. Instead, I am going to apply #sociology coupled with my #informationtechnology, #businesstransformation and #programmanagement background to look at some of the root causes, the behaviours, trends, #organisational issues and contemporary #society to really provide some practical focus to project management. I hope you will join me on the #channel and through this newsletter which I will do on a monthly basis.

You can find the @Youtube channel here @projectmanagerclinic. We will discuss practical ways to apply project management technique to some common project flaws and also identify some more complex ones to offer project managers practical ways of applying the techniques they already know. You might be surprised how many project techniques can be used by anyone, not just project managers to manage through problems and difficult situations even outside of a project environment.

The format of the YouTube Channel

The channel will feature a relaxed easy format with tools and techniques I have developed or used successfully, and include examples and conversations with other experts. The presentations format will;

  1. Identify a project management symptom
  2. Demonstrate which tools and techniques can be applied, and when in order to relieve the symptom
  3. Include a section with Easy tips in under ten minutes - short videos to keep the fun in your project management day. See the first one, My Three Rules of Project Management here

The channel will feature 'Conversations' with Master Project Managers and include;

  • Masters Series - Preeminent project managers who will reveal how they would approach certain issues and which tools and techniques they have found work and when to use them.
  • A discussion on common Project Management misconceptions and issues including a guide on how to deal successfully with a potential project failure.
  • Finally, the Clinic will provide contemporary comment on Project Management today, identifying some broader issues and barriers to project success and how we might deal with those situations.

For more information on what will be included in the sessions and the types of sessions to come, follow the link to the PRESENTATION - Intro to the PM Clinic.

The Masters will include conversations with preeminent project managers with details of Episode 1 below, "in conversation with Elizabeth Roodenrys" on 21 July 2023.

Masters Series - Episode 1 in Conversation with Elizabeth Roodenrys 21 July 2023

Topic - "Is it Me or is it Them - How a bad support or organisational structure can limit project success

Have you noticed that many of the projects in your organisation consistently struggle to deliver or even fail? Have you ever wondered if it's the project manager, the expectation's of unrealistic stakeholders or if it's a symptom of an organisation that is not set up to support successful project outcomes. In other words is it me or is it the organisation (them)?

In this conversation we look at some of the common pointers to identifying if your organisation might limit your performance and why and what you can do about it. Exploring this concept with me is long term project management professional, Elizabeth Roodenrys.

A little about Elizabeth

Elizabeth's breadth of experience in both program management and transformational change equips her with the insight for this conversation to explore the broader organisational barriers to project success. Her strategic approach has seen her work across delivery in business and IT programs, with projects ranging from infrastructure and operations, outsourced service delivery, architecture and design, and application development in the private sector, government, and higher education. See more about Elizabeth at her LinkedIn Profile

Stay tuned to the Newsletter and SUBSCRIBE to the YouTube Channel so you will be alerted to the videos and the Session with Elizabeth. I will be adding a schedule of events for those interested shortly and I am currently looking to develop a session on #Recruitment of experienced Project Managers. Why are we asking them the same questions and what could a great interview of a 'Master' Project Manager include?

How I can help you and your Organisation to deliver great projects and business outcomes

Some of the ways that I can help you and your organisation include;

  • Project Manager Clinic or PM Clinic offering coaching and mentoring programs for project managers, stakeholders, sponsors and organisations that can be tailored to your requirements.
  • Business Transformation Roadmap planning and strategy - development of the entire business roadmap to achieve the desired transformation

  • Project recovery, assessment and action planning
