AI Meets Netnography - Part 1
Unlocking Insights through AI-powered Research by Sian Topp, July 2024
In today’s digital world, we can learn a lot about consumer behaviour and preferences from their online presence. Whilst Netnography (online ethnography) isn’t a new concept, the way we approach it at Strive Insight certainly is. We’ve taken it to the next level by harnessing the power of AI and integrating it into our human-led methodology.
We’ve amassed a whole host of cutting-edge tools that enable us to gather data and scrape all corners of the internet. From review sites, social media, forums, to branded content, we analyse all types of content including text, image, and video. This holistic approach gives us hundreds of thousands of data points from which to identify new insights.
We have all this data, now what? This is where we leverage AI applications and new skills for maximum impact. Whilst we can use public LLMs and gather good insight, we at Strive (and at Radius – our partners in crime in the US) have developed proprietary tools that incorporate Generative AI code. These tools allow us to analyse ‘big data’ with ease. We can establish consumer expressions, code themes, rate sentiments and quantify behaviours from data that can be qualitative in nature but at a quantitative, robust scale.
By harnessing the power of AI, we can focus our efforts on the creative and strategic aspects of our projects and let our ‘assistant’ do much of the repetitive heavy lifting. Our trusty ‘assistant’ can help us with many different tasks and has already proven useful for refining segment definitions, repositioning a Gen Z brand, optimising a loyalty programme…to name just a few!
Now we’re not saying AI is perfect as it doesn’t have all the answers, but it does come in handy when you need it to. The transformative developments in natural language, visual analysis and removing the human bias that researchers can add, make it an exciting space to keep an eye on. I’m intrigued to see what commercial problems we can solve with AI in the future!
However, while we welcome these advancements, it’s important to remain mindful of the challenges associated with AI. In our next blog, we’ll look at some of the potential issues associated with using AI in research and how we at Strive mitigate these risks.
Stay tuned for Part 2 in next month's newsletter, where Sian will discuss the limitations of using AI in research.
The Shell Recharge Driver Programme Report
Strive's work with Shell by Mark Yeomans, August 2024
At certain points in your career, you get to be involved in research that is genuinely looking to make a positive change in the world.
Over the last 6 months or so, we at Strive Insight have had the pleasure of working on the Shell Recharge Driver Programme, which has used survey data as the ‘engine’ for a major thought leadership piece focusing on the Electric Vehicle (EV) category.
The report in this post is shared publicly so that Shell’s partners and others in the EV space can learn from the insights and help drive the category forward as part of the movement to Net-Zero emissions.
Alongside the external-facing outputs, it’s also been hugely rewarding to see just how widely the insights are being used internally by the business to drive progress – starting with a series of webcasts at the end of July.
Thanks Edith Bardin , Geertje van Keulen and Zulay. R for getting us involved and being a great partner, and to all the wider Shell team for helping us deliver such a huge survey (almost 34,000 EV drivers and non-EV drivers across 9 countries). It’s been one of the most satisfying things we’ve worked on for a while and hopefully wins us both an MRS Award later in the year.
