SpaceX: Cellular Starlink Service Is Ready to Go

SpaceX now has enough satellites in Earth's orbit to offer commercial services for its cellular Starlink system. The company now has over 320 'direct to cell' Starlink satellites in space. The service will work with normal mobile phones without any extra equipment or special apps. SpaceX is partnering with T-Mobile to offer cellular satellite technology to consumers. The company still needs approval from the FCC before it can operate a commercial cellular service.

Vast, a space startup, has shown off the final design for its Haven-1 commercial space station. The cylindrical outpost is designed to house state-of-the-art facilities for scientific research. Vast hopes to launch its station via a SpaceX Falcon 9 no earlier than August 2025.

Apple's foldable iPad could be like ‘two iPad Pros side-by-side'

Apple hopes to release a foldable 18.8-inch creaseless iPad by about 2028. Its industrial design group has reportedly managed to create prototypes of the device. It is unknown whether the device will be able to run Mac apps, but rumors say that iPadOS should be advanced enough to run macOS apps by 2028. A foldable iPhone is still apparently in the works.

Samsung's premium Laser TV becomes world's first certified 8K projector

Samsung's yet-to-be-launched The Premiere 8K projector is the industry's first recipient of the 8K Association's new certification and logo. The projector excelled across all key categories. There aren't many details available about the upcoming premium ultra-short-throw projector, but Samsung has released a few official images. Samsung will likely reveal more details, including pricing and availability, at CES 2025.

Google plans to put Android on your face

This article details an experience with Samsung's Project Moohan, the first device to run Android XR. The experience of using its UI feels similar to that of the Apple Vision Pro's, but Google-flavored. Google believes that Gemini will help Android XR crack the augmented reality puzzle. 

Two people communicate in dreams: Inception movie-styled sci-fi turned into reality

Lucid dreams could unlock new dimensions of communication. Researchers at REMspace recently demonstrated that people can communicate in their dreams. Participants in REMspace's study were able to send and receive messages through a server that recorded their brain waves and other polysomnographic data during REM sleep. The company plans to release a device that accurately tracks all sleep stages for customers to view on a mobile app by 2025.

Largest brain map ever reveals fruit fly's neurons in exquisite detail

Researchers now have a map of the brain of a single female fruit fly that includes nearly 140,000 neurons and captures more than 54.5 million synapses. The map was described in a package of nine papers by a consortium known as FlyWire, which is co-led by neuroscientists Mala Murthy and Sebastian Seung at Princeton University in New Jersey. It has been in development for more than four years. The map shows how neurons connect through chemical synapses but doesn't offer any information about electrical connectivity between neurons or how neurons chemically communicate outside synapses.

Sonair takes a cue from dolphins to build autonomous 3D vision without lidar

Sonair has developed an ultrasound-based 3D computer vision technology for autonomous hardware. Aiming to replace lidar by offering a cost-effective and low-energy alternative, the system uses AI for object recognition and provides a 180-degree field of view. Sonair is initially targeting autonomous mobile robots. It recently raised $6.8 million to support technology aimed at enhancing robot perception.
