Welcoming new industry members, Part 2: How to use Dow Building Science products

According to data published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics last November, construction industry employment rose by 248,000 jobs year-over-year. Dow has enjoyed meeting some of these new industry members at events, but for those we have not had the chance to meet yet who will be working with our products, welcome! This blog post series is for you.

This is part two of our four-part series. The first part introduced Dow and our products, and this part will provide information on how to use some of Dow’s products. While this blog series should help industry newcomers get a feel for Dow, we also pride ourselves on having knowledgeable technical service and support. Dow Sales and Technical Service & Development Representatives are available to help support training needs. Contact us with specific topics as needs arise to take full advantage of Dow’s knowledgeable service and support offerings.

Dow Products and Supporting Content

DOWSIL™ 375 Construction and Glass Embedding: A two-part polyurethane designed for installation of frameless glass balustrades for pure glass aesthetics and invisible bonding. Enables balustrade designs with fixation of glass panes at their base, resulting in a clean, modern appearance.

DOWSIL™ Contractors Paintable Sealant: This one-part, fast-curing, non-sagging, elastomeric hybrid sealant cures quickly and is paintable as soon as it is tack-free. It can be used for commercial, light commercial, residential, frame-to-structure and perimeter caulking of windows, doors, panels, etc., dynamically moving joints such as expansion and control joints, precast concrete panels, EIFS, aluminum and masonry and many other construction materials where paintability is required.

Build a Better Barrier: High-performance buildings demand exceptional protection. Design with confidence using the DOWSIL™ Silicone Air Barrier System – a variety of silicone technologies that help you build a better barrier to protect the building envelope from air, water and vapor in both renovation and new construction.

Build a Better Barrier videos:

Carbon Neutral Silicones: Dow is now offering the first-ever carbon-neutrality service – available for silicones used in structural glazing, insulating glass and weathersealing applications on high-performance building façades. Produced in compliance with the internationally recognized PAS 2060 verified carbon neutrality standard, Dow Carbon-Neutral Silicones for Building Façades can support green-building design initiatives, enhance façade sustainability, and improve green-building ratings across the construction industry.

DOWSIL™ 983 Structural Glazing Sealant: Designed for specialized use where dual structural and weatherseal applications are desired for factory glazing and curtainwall production. Once cured, this structural sealant forms a durable, flexible, watertight bond that can be warranted for 20 years and used in ±25% movement weatherseal applications. It has excellent unprimed adhesion to glass, alodine, and anodized aluminum, and DOWSIL™ Primer-C OS is recommended, when needed, for fast and consistent adhesion, especially to high-performance substrates approved for architectural structural glazing applications.

DOWSIL™ 121 Structural Glazing Sealant: Designed to enhance productivity and for cost efficiency for assembly, installation and repair of structurally glazed glass.

DOWSIL™ 890-SL Silicone Joint Sealant: Self-leveling silicone sealant for concrete and concrete-to-asphalt pavement joints.

DOWSIL™ 888 Silicone Joint Sealant: One-part, non-sag silicone material that cures to a low-modulus silicone rubber upon exposure to atmospheric moisture. Can be applied over a wide temperature range.

DOWSIL™ 902 RCS Joint Sealant: A self-leveling, cold-applied, rapid-cure, two-part, easy-to-install, ultra-low-modulus, 100 percent silicone rubber sealant designed to seal expansion joints that experience both thermal and/or vertical movements due to traffic loading.

Additional Product Use Related Dow Resources

Construction Calculators: Dow offers a full line of performance silicone sealants for structural glazing and weatherproofing applications. Dow’s construction calculators will help you estimate the amount of sealant you may need for your project. Construction calculators are available for sealant, primer, circular panels, rectangular and square panels, triangular panels, deadload, and thermal movement.

Test Wall for Infiltration & Windload Testing: With the capabilities of our Dow Building Science Studio test wall, our experts can help you ensure your designs meet air and water infiltration and windload standards. A full range of standard and cyclic air and water infiltration/exfiltration, air barrier and structural wind load tests are available to meet your specific needs.

Adhesion Testing: Dow recommends adhesion testing be performed at the job site. We have created a video on how to properly perform this procedure.

The products listed above are products that have recent training content digitally available and is not a comprehensive list of Dow’s product line. If you would like more information or training on one of Dow’s products, please contact us here.

Stay tuned for our next blog post, which will highlight how to document Dow products once they are selected for use!
