We’re in the Rough

We’re in the Rough

For all of us golf fans, it’s a great weekend as the granddaddy of the majors kicked off yesterday. That’s right; the 151st Open Championship teed off at Royal Liverpool in England. We all have favorites, but this person (based on my lineage) is pulling for the young man from Hollywood (Northern Ireland).

Interestingly, Liverpool is also home to four kids who came to America and brought a new-fangled sound called rock and roll.

We are also in the thick of summer, and we all know that can be a hectic time in the construction world. Talented women and men are working tirelessly to build new laboratories, academic institutions, data centers, hospitals, and more.

If you have looked at the news, however, you will also have seen that we are dealing with one of the more severe stretches of heat than we have seen in quite some time, both here in the United States and worldwide. That can make for some rather adverse conditions for construction projects and workers on site.

We thought it would be helpful to share a story from ForConstructionPros that provides tips for summer construction safety, which include:

  1. Drink more. Fluids — especially water — are your best defense against heat. Make sure all workers have water on hand and keep coolers available for refills. If plain water isn’t your thing, squeeze in some lemon or lime or opt for sports drinks that replenish electrolytes lost when you sweat.
  2. Eat right. High-fat, greasy meals like burgers and fries weigh you down, and your body uses more energy to digest them. Choose a light and filling meal that both curb hunger and helps you stay alert.
  3. Dress light. In addition to any required safety gear, wear clothing that’s light-colored, loose, and breathable. It will reflect sunlight and make it easier for heat to escape, keeping you cool as you work. For further protection, wear a hat or sunglasses and reapply sunscreen throughout the day.
