What is an annulment?

An annulment is similar to a divorce in the sense that both remove the confines of the marital bond from the couple. The key difference is that after an annulment, the marriage has been dissolved in such a way that it is as if the parties were never even married in the first place. This is because annulment is most often based on the grounds of fraud.

How do I know if I qualify for an Annulment?

If your spouse was married (either knowingly or unintentionally) at the time you married them, then you may qualify for an annulment. This is because in N.Y., bigamy (being married to more than one person at a time) is illegal. For more information, call our office and we will give you a free telephone consultation.

Another common way you qualify for an annulment is if your spouse lied to you about their intentions to start a family to induce you into marriage. Let’s say you’re dating your significant other, and they promise you that they want to start a family with you. They tell you if you marry them, then they will have children with you. But, after the wedding, everything changes. Now they refuse to have relations with you and may even outright tell you they lied to you and never intended to start a family with you at all. These circumstances may qualify you for an annulment. Call our office to find out if you qualify for an annulment today.
