What to avoid when it comes to public speaking

Let's break down the art of public speaking into easy-to-follow steps. Public Service Announcements (PSAs) usually offer helpful tips, but here, consider this article as your own Personal Speaking Advice. I'm here to help you shine when it's your turn to speak, and trust me, making a great first impression isn't as tough as it seems.

Even though speaking in public can be scary, being able to grab people's attention is super important. Whether you're talking in a meeting, at a big event, or in your community, starting off on the right foot matters a lot.

Let’s go over some simple tips for becoming a public speaking pro and talk about some things you should definitely avoid.

Know Your Audience

First things first, understand who you're talking to. Try to match what you say to what they care about. Think about what they already know and what they expect from you.

Be Confident

Being confident is like showing everyone that you know what you're talking about. Stand up straight, look people in the eye, and speak clearly. Practice what you want to say so you feel ready and sure of yourself.

Use Your Body Language

Your body can say a lot without you even talking. Use open gestures, look friendly, and stand up straight. If you seem positive and interested, people will be more interested in what you're saying.

Start Strong

Catch people's attention right from the beginning. Tell an interesting story, ask a question, or use a cool quote. A good start makes everyone want to hear more.

Practice Makes Progress

Nobody's perfect, but practice definitely helps. Rehearse what you want to say until you feel comfortable with it. You can practice in front of a mirror, record yourself, or even ask a friend to listen and give feedback. The more you practice, the easier it gets.

Watch Out for These Mistakes

Here are some things you should avoid:

  • Don't Overload with Info: Stick to the important stuff so you don't confuse people.
  • Avoid Being Boring: Change your tone and speed to keep people interested.
  • Be Ready for Questions: Think about what people might ask you and have good answers ready.
  • Stay Focused: Try not to do things like fidgeting or moving around too much. It can distract people from what you're saying.

By following these tips and steering clear of common mistakes, you can make a great impression every time you speak in public. Remember, each time you talk in front of others is a chance to show what you know and connect with them. If you want some extra help getting better at public speaking, I'm here for you. Record yourself, listen for filler words (sounds) like ummm and words you use too often so you become aware of them then work to limit (eliminate) their use. I was listening to my home town football team's game a few years ago (go Saints!) when I noticed that the color commentator began the majority of comments with the term, "I mean." I was so distracted I began counting the "I means" in the second half to the point that I was no longer paying attention to the game! Thirty-seven times he said "I Mean"! (Rest in peace Hokie).
