What is ChatGPT? Should we be concerned about this technology?
ChatGPT is a large, pre-trained language model developed by OpenAI that can understand and generate human-like text, which can be used for tasks such as chatbots, language translation, and text summarization. It can be trained in any domain, such as medical or legal, etc. It could help creative problem-solving by providing new perspectives and suggestions.
So what is the concern?
The more significant concern is that the over-reliance on ChatGPT to generate ideas and content could decrease originality and authenticity. It will be used as a substitute for human creativity, causing declining demand for human creativity and potentially reducing the number of job opportunities for creative professionals.
Who should be concerned about this technology?
The gig economy/labour workforce - ChatGPT can automate content generation work, such as product descriptions or blog posts, which could replace the need for freelance writers. Companies could use ChatGPT-powered chatbots to answer customers' queries, which can directly impact the customer service industry.

Google and other tech companies - Google's big chunk of revenue come from Google's advertisement on search engine. ChatGPT is very similar to the google search engine algorithm. As I mentioned earlier, this technology can be trained on any domain or data. It means, without massive capital investment, anyone can start a search engine business using ChatGPT. The immense fear for Google is if OpenAI (ChatGPT)can enter a digital search engine business. Remember Michael Poter's five forces --- Threat of new entrants.
However, Google is a pioneer in natural language processing, machine learning, and Artificial intelligence. It will not be surprising if Google brings more sophisticated and intelligent algorithms shortly.
In conclusion, ChatGPT has the potential to significantly impact the gig economy, labour force, and tech industry in both positive and negative ways. It could automate specific tasks and make it easier for gig workers to find work, but it could also lead to job loss and decreased demand for human labour. But we should remember that any new revolutions create new kinds of opportunities, and we must be agile to adopt them.
With all the hype around ChatGPT, it’s refreshing to read alternative viewpoints. People tend to jump into a new tech right away without really thinking about privacy and the ultimate effects.
