What is a DevOps Engineer?

DevOps is all about bringing the operations and the software development teams together to build better software more quickly, while reducing costs with better quality and innovation.

The role of a DevOps Engineer is to speed up application delivery on the cloud but also just as importantly to be the link between the operations and the developers. As DevOps is quite a new sector it is evolving quickly and to be at the top of your game you must always be learning and using the latest technologies.

To be a DevOps engineer you need to be able to work in multiple teams and tie together processes. Having a strong understanding in cloud environments is key, especially public cloud AWS, Azure and GCP, with experience deploying and managing applications in cloud.

As a DevOps engineer you will be expected to have scripting skills (Python, Shell, Bash, etc.) to save time and create consistency across applications.

Continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) are key in any DevOps environment. CI/CD pipelines have several automated tasks to help developers focus on the build and delivery of the product, generally consisting of Build, Test, Release, and Operations.

Containerisation is also a key part of DevOps, with Docker and Kubernetes being 2 of the most common containers used in a modern DevOps environment. Containers are a key part of software development today, so adding this to your skill set is important to becoming a top DevOps engineer.

And lastly, don’t forget that to be a good DevOps engineer you must also work on your soft skills as you will be expected to collaborate with multiple teams and become an evangelist for the DevOps environment and promoting the benefits and importance of it in a modern IT department.
