I worked with dealerships all over North America with Dealer Fx and helped dealerships upgrade their online and in store customer experience. The OEM driven service solutions and upgraded digital process was not only more efficient and profitable for dealerships it is loved by customers due to the enhanced transparency and superior interaction with customers online and in store. Many of the dealerships I worked with fought the change initially, but as management and staff saw how happy their customers were they quickly made the move to these new tools.
The world is not standing still of course and innovative companies like Go Moto and others are moving the Digital experience forward by offering customers different service options to enhance the service experience and even create great experiences when the service department is closed. Years ago the best experience was a night drop envelope, remember those. McDonald's and others have already proven this model and customers love the Go Moto solution. The question is how will dealerships change the sales process online and in store in 2020 to make it easier and better for customers to buy vehicles from your dealership or group. What about an information kiosk on the lot that is open 24-7 or solutions on vehicles that interact with mobile phone like the Qr Code solutions in big markets like China and elsewhere.
Customer Experience is King in 2020 and it all start with the experience on their phones before they even select what dealership they will visit.

Dealerships and brands are already looking for Solutions to the changing automotive landscape around the world.
Dealerships and brands are popping up in many different places in 2020 and brands like Hyundai and others are changing the ways cars are sold in 2020 and beyond.
Brands like Genesis in Canada and elsewhere are selling vehicles differently and getting results and making it easier for customers to buy and service their products in 2020. Customer are busy and they no longer want to spend hour in dealerships to purchase or service their vehicles. Customers want the kind of service they can easily get from Amazon Nordstrom, Alibaba, Hello Fresh, Casper, Zappos and many others in 2020.
The size of your dealership and how fancy the interior is is not as relevant in 2020.
Customers are looking for great experiences, an easy and helpful process and spending as little time as possible to select, find, finance, and drive the vehicle they want. The days of customers wanting to spend 8 hours in a dealership and visiting 5 dealers before making a selection are quite simply over. Customers are spending more and more time online and on their mobile devices and are only visiting dealerships that make it easy for them to buy a vehicle. Potential customers are judging your brand and dealership on their phones first in 2020.
How difficult is it for a customer to buy a vehicle from your store on a mobile phone?
Digital retailing is more than online advertising, more than a website and more than omni channel marketing. True digital retailing is making it easy for customers to select the right product for their needs, determine what it will cost and even get a value for their old car and get approved for their next one right from their mobile device. Customers would also prefer to save time by purchasing accessories, warranty, and even insurance online if possible. Retailers like Alibaba, Nordstrom, Zappos and Amazon are already making purchases easy for customers and it in no secret that customers are now demanding as close to an end to end online experience as possible. Companies like Genesis, Tesla, Carvana and others are making buying a car easier and this is what digital retail will become in the near future for all retailers.
Large Showrooms with Cafe's are quite simply not enough to sell cars anymore.
Customers do their homework on mobile today and if your mobile experience is not exceptional they won't take the time to visit your fancy showroom anyway.
The great news is exceptional online experiences are possible and exceptional in store experiences are also possible with smaller footprints and a focus on exceptional customer service like Disney, Nordstroms and others. Customers value their time and will pay more for an exceptional shopping experience and products and services that are delivered in a timely transparent and effective way. I have studied various retail locations and models for over 20 years now and there are dealers that have already started making the changes needed to compete with industry disruptors like Tesla, Carvana, Byton, Rivian and others.
Don't let these new firms steal your business and revenue because you refuse to change the way you do business in 2020.
Changes you need to make today.
One: Take a closer look at how easy it is to do business with your dealership from a mobile device compared to your local dealerships and brands like Tesla. Put yourself in the shoes of the customer and remember they have choices. Customers only look at 2 or three dealers today not the 5 they considered in the past.
Two: How long does it take on a mobile device for a customer to get all the information they need to make an informed decision and how easy is it for them to reach out to your store from a mobile device. How easy is it for a customer to reach out to your team from their phone.
Three: Can a customer quickly find the vehicle they are looking for and determine pricing and payments. How easy is it for them to choose your dealership and buy from your team. Do you offer test drives at the customers home or office for example. Can customers get a sense of payments or trade value.
Four: Is your in store experience aligned with your online experience and how quickly can customers make a purchase, take delivery or schedule a test drive or service their vehicle. Remember digital retailing is about creating a great experience in store to compliment your best in market online experience.
Five: Look for examples in your local market or in other markets and model your process after the best dealerships and firms in the marketplace. Amazon Go, Tesla, Carvana and others are not standing still. Your team needs to start making changes today to drive growth and adopt a Kaizen attitude of continuous improvement to survive and thrive in the automotive marketplace in 2020.
Groups Like Paragon Honda, Hendrick automotive, Sonic, Go Automotive, Cox Automotive and others are always looking for way get better and your dealership or dealer group can too.
Remember that building a large fancy dealership with glorious lighting and a huge footprint does not drive growth by itself. The attitude of Build it and they will come is not enough anymore. There are no spare customers and loyalty and growth are driven by a truly exceptional and digital customer experience in 2020.
