What do you want from life?

What do you want from life?

Hi there,

The end of the year can bring up strong feelings, either of disappointment or of gratefulness or let’s face it- a mix of all of it!

Have you ever felt like you’re trapped in your own life? Like you’re stuck on a hamster wheel, doing the same things over and over, but never really moving forward? You’re not alone. It’s a strange kind of exhaustion—feeling busy but not fulfilled, productive but not purposeful. Deep down, you might even wonder if this endless cycle is all there is. But here’s the good news: it’s not.

Most of us get caught in this cycle, and before we know it, years pass, leaving us asking, What do I really want in life?

Here’s the thing: you don’t need to have all the answers right now. Life isn’t about nailing down a single passion or purpose that stays constant forever. It’s about leaning into curiosity, taking small steps, and trusting that each move forward will reveal something new. Your purpose isn’t a destination; it’s a dynamic, evolving part of your journey.

Instead, it’s about pursuing a mission—a larger vision that evolves with you, pushing you to grow, adapt, and embrace the unknown.

Right now, you might feel like your life lacks direction. Maybe you’re overwhelmed by negative thoughts, paralysed by indecision, or unsure what path to take. It’s okay to feel stuck—it’s a signal, not a sentence. Being stuck often comes when you’re on the verge of change, nudging you to examine your current choices and explore what truly matters to you.

It’s tempting to think, Maybe this is just the way life is meant to be. But deep down, you know there’s something missing.

Here’s the truth: The only way to figure out what you truly want is to let yourself make mistakes, take risks, and learn from them. You can’t discover who you are or what you’re capable of by staying in your comfort zone.

Let’s unpack this step by step.

Why You Feel Stuck (and Why It’s Not Your Fault)

From the time we’re kids, we’re taught to follow a script:

  • Study hard.
  • Get a secure job.
  • Stick to the “safe” path and climb the corporate ladder

But no one tells us that this script often leads to a life that feels small, repetitive, and uninspired. It’s like being trained to fit into a narrow box, even when your natural instincts are to explore, create, and adapt.

Here’s where it gets tricky:

  • You were trained to specialise. Society tells us to focus on one thing—doctor, lawyer, engineer—as if one label can define our entire existence. But the world is changing and rapidly so. The most impactful lives are often lived at the intersection of multiple passions, skills, and curiosities. You weren’t made to fit into one box; you were designed to adapt, explore, and redefine yourself as you grow.

But humans are natural generalists. Our strength lies in adapting, learning, and building skills across different areas.

  • You were taught to fear mistakes. Yet, mistakes are how we grow. They’re not failures; they’re clues, showing us what doesn’t work so we can find what does.
  • You’ve been chasing “the one true path.” But life isn’t about finding a single purpose—it’s about exploring, experimenting, and evolving as your dreams and desires change.

If you feel lost or unsure of what you want, it’s not because you’re failing. It’s because you’ve been looking for clarity in all the wrong places.

The First Step: Redefine What You Don’t Want

Clarity doesn’t come from magically knowing what you want—it comes from realising what you don’t want.

Take a hard look at your life:

  • What feels draining, uninspiring, or frustrating?
  • What habits, relationships, or routines do you want to leave behind?

Write it all down. Be brutally honest. This isn’t about being negative—it’s about creating space for something better.

Once you know what you want to let go of, you can start asking: What would the opposite of this look like? That’s where the magic happens.

Here’s what helped me- Journaling! I started writing 5 things that drained me after a hard day and 5 things that energised me during a busy but fulfilling day. The key is to eliminate the energy-drainers and include more of the energy-giving habits in a day to ensure I’m uplifted most days.

How to Take Control of Your Life

So, how do you move forward when you feel stuck? Here’s a roadmap:

  1. Get brutally honest about your current reality. Take a step back and assess where you are. What about your life feels unfulfilling? What patterns keep repeating? Allow yourself to feel frustrated—that energy can fuel your desire to change.
  2. Take a bold step into the unknown. Stop waiting for permission to start. Whether it’s pursuing a dream, trying something new, or letting go of a habit that no longer serves you, take action—even if it feels scary or “stupid.” Mistakes are part of the process.
  3. Channel your energy into growth. When you step into the unknown, you’ll face challenges, discomfort, and even failure. Use these moments as fuel to learn, adapt, and grow. Build skills, seek knowledge, and keep moving forward, no matter how messy it feels.

The Secret to Long-Lasting Change

Here’s a truth most people don’t talk about: real transformation takes time. You won’t turn your life around in two weeks. Give yourself at least three months to focus on small, consistent changes. Here’s what you can do to be more creative everyday:

  • Shift your mental habits: Replace negative self-talk with curiosity and determination.
  • Try new things: Read a book, learn a skill, or step outside your routine.

It might not feel exciting at first, but as you keep showing up, you’ll start to see progress. And that progress will make everything else feel worth it.

Challenge for You This Week

Take one small step toward change:

  • Write down what you don’t want in life.
  • Identify one fear or hesitation holding you back.
  • Take one bold action—even if it’s just starting a conversation, signing up for a class, or writing down a new goal.

Remember: clarity doesn’t come from thinking—it comes from doing.

You’re capable of more than you realise. The only question is: Are you ready to take the first step?
