What does post-digital look like?

Imagine a world where everything you need is available within three moves of your thumb. This may sound like a version of Aladdin's story, but in reality, it’s almost already here. When you need a taxi, you don’t call a dispatcher, explain where you need to go, and wait for a response—you get an Uber or something similar. You don’t watch TV with a preselected program—you choose what you want to watch through Disney+, Netflix, Apple TV, or any other service.

The same applies to governments. Want to become an entrepreneur? It should be done in three moves of your thumb. Need childcare? Everything available in your vicinity, whether from the public or private sector, should be accessible within three moves of your thumb. The possibilities of a digital-first approach transform how we live our lives and experience the world around us.

This is not a fairy tale. Many of these digital-first services are already a reality, and the formula to get there is not complex—but it is comprehensive. It requires changes to policies and regulations, education of civil servants, modernization of digital public infrastructure, and setting the right goals. This is what transformation truly is, and it’s best to get started sooner rather than later because the genie is out of the bottle.
