What does the Rainbow Flag mean to you?
It’s June – we all know what that means – RAINBOWS! EVERYWHERE!
Please don’t misunderstand me, I have nothing against the rainbow (I just look better in black). But I can’t ignore the influx of special branding designed solely for Pride Month (the best month).
This practice is often referred to as “rainbow washing”. It involves businesses temporarily adopting rainbow-colored logos, products, and marketing materials to align themselves with the LGBTQ+ community. While this might appear as a gesture of solidarity, it frequently lacks genuine commitment to LGBTQ+ causes and is driven by profit motives.
The issue with rainbow washing lies in its insincerity. Companies often fail to follow through with substantial actions or support beyond the colourful branding. They may not donate to LGBTQ+ organizations, support policies that protect LGBTQ+ rights, or even ensure inclusive practices within their own workplaces. This is a performance and not a true reflection of a company’s dedication to equality.

Moreover, rainbow washing can dilute the significance of Pride Month, a time meant to honour the struggles and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community. It reduces a profound movement for human rights to a marketing trend, potentially overshadowing the voices and stories of those who have fought and continue to fight for true equality.
To address this, companies should be held accountable for their actions beyond June. True support involves year-round commitment, including implementing inclusive policies, donating to LGBTQ+ causes, and using their platform to advocate for meaningful change. Consumers, in turn, should critically evaluate the actions of these companies and support those that demonstrate genuine allyship. Ending rainbow washing is essential to ensure that Pride Month remains a time of authentic celebration and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community.
For those who truly support the LGBTQ+ community – fly that rainbow flag year-round! Because equality and recognition don’t just exist in June!
