What is eLearning?
Lexico.com defines eLearning as “Learning conducted via electronic media, typically on the Internet”.
Here's a short video from E-Learning Media that explains it:
eLearning was coined sometime towards the end of the old millennium, i.e., 1999, and is generally accepted to refer to electronic learning. Specifically, Elliot Maisie was the first to use the term in 1999 and it marked the first time that it was used professionally, It is commonly understood to mean the deliberate use of electronic means in teaching and learning. In the era of the third industrial revolution, these electronic means refer to computer networks and information and communication technology. Sometimes, the term eLearning is interchanged with terms like web-based or Internet-based learning, online learning, virtual learning, or even distributed and network-based learning. At the very least, they all refer to the use of information and communication technology to facilitate educational processes in both synchronous and asynchronous forms.
The term “virtual learning” and “virtual learning environments” typically conjure images of a synthetic world that rans parallel or may even replace real life. Contrary to this perception, virtual learning environments are not meant as a substitute to our classrooms nor to supersede current educational practices. Instead, what they are supposed to provide is an enhancement of existing educational experiences, by providing opportunities to challenge both teachers and students alike to dream of new ways to achieve the objectives of a learning environment.
It is also imperative to our understanding of eLearning to appreciate the factors that led to its growth through the years. Some of these factors are:
• Growth of Multimedia – By integrating multimedia elements like audio, graphics, images, and videos to eLearning content, the challenge of engaging learners and keeping them interested in the lessons has been mitigated. It has promoted better learning interactions compared to traditional methods.
• The Internet – By providing a networked infrastructure that allowed the sharing of materials faster, more effectively, and more efficiently, the Internet encouraged the proliferation of more resources and provided for more flexibility in eLearning content distribution.
• Wireless technologies – By extending the reach of the Internet beyond tethered connections or wired networks, the advent of wireless technology allowed for the ease of access of eLearning that provided an ubiquitous experience, the anytime, anywhere value of eLearning.
• Affordable Digital Devices – With computers in general, and mobile devices in particular, the increasing availability and affordability of these devices contributed hugely in bringing eLearning to the hands of more and more learners across the world.

• Learning Management Systems (LMS) – Maturing from on-premise software applications to cloud-based learning platforms, the growth in sophistication and capability of the learning management systems has allowed eLearning to gain wider acceptance and implementation across more forms of training and education.
In general, the term eLearning is much broader than any of the terms mentioned in the earlier paragraphs. We will cover them in more detail in succeeding editions of this topic.
