Smart city is a science topic that interest me and it spans across different areas. The easiest ones are data related initiatives and I agree with Karmei that those involve extensive revamp of infrastructural development can be difficult to push unless there is an agenda from the government.

If sensors are one of the major building blocks of a smart city, it will be necessary to stay in step with the development of nanotechnology such as advanced materials and micro-fabrication that creates the next generation of sensors. Also don't forget the fact that nanotechnology is also the key for developing the hardware of quantum computing!
