WHAT EXACTLY IS SOLID SURFACE?

WHAT EXACTLY IS SOLID SURFACE?

Solid Surface is the sleek, sexy, flexible, younger cousin to the other more well established materials in the market today, being a contemporary and modern alternative product.

Most people are aware and understand about the more traditional materials such as stone, marble and granite, which are all beautiful and used extensively.

So the question remains what exactly is Solid Surface and how can it enhance projects?

Hold on to your hats, here comes the Science:

Solid Surface itself is a hard as stone surface material, which has been formulated using a blend of acrylic polymer and aluminium trihydrate (ATH) which is a material derived from bauxite ore. There are other variants of this on the market place today, with some manufacturers using polyester instead of the acrylic.

OK are you still awake?

Now for the exciting stuff!

Firstly there are quite a few brands to choose from in the marketplace today.

The most well-known names are Corian, Hi Macs, Staron, Hanex and Avonite, although there are others to choose from.

How do the brands differ?

They are produced by different companies, each with their own palette of colours, (with sinks and bathroom sinks to complement) and pricing structure. Each product mentioned offers a ten year manufacturers warranty.

Chemically all are more or less the same. All are absolutely fantastic products that we are pleased and proud to work with.

As Solid Surface is man-made, it is produced in sheets of material. This material can then be cut, heated and formed into any number of shapes and sizes.

There are a huge number of colours available, with enough choice to satisfy most designs.

It has been used extensively for s wide variety of applications, these are just a few:

·      Kitchen counter tops

·       Bathroom tops

·       Bar tops

·       Reception Desks

·       Teapoint tops

·       Wall cladding

·       Shower trays

·       Shopfront cladding

· Bespoke Sinks

·       Trough sinks

·       Drinks shelves

This diversity makes it a perfect material for projects where longer lengths or curves are desired, so should you want a four metre, or five metre bar top, this can be achieved with inconspicuous seams.
