What is the formula for Personal Brand?

I have been consulting on Personal Branding for over 6 years, and in the last couple of years with the added knowledge of psychology and coaching, i’ve been working on uncovering what’s the connection between personal brand and personal growth for an individual

Today, as we all embark into a new year; filled with new aspirations, new challenges and new hopes; i’d like to share a glimpse into what i’ve discovered, or so i think :)

Let me start by sharing some examples from my work experience so far….

  1. Arianna believes vegan is good. So, she speaks about ahimsa, she writes about food choices for vegans, she wears clothes which were made without killing any living organisms…
  2. Sid believes he is not good in finance but has no intention to learn it. So, he skips finance and banking lessons, hates investments and taxation, feels bored when his friends speak about personal finances....
  3. Janet believes she should be promoted. But, she also believes that she doesn’t deserve it. So, her behaviour is quite erratic ‘coz there are days when she speaks with confidence as a subject matter expert and behaves like a leader in charge, and then there are situations when she backs out and fears that she will mess up the project.

Can you relate to any of these?

The discovery is:

Personal Brand = fn ( Beliefs + Behaviour)

i.e. Your Personal Brand is a function of your Beliefs and your Behaviour.

Beliefs are what you believe about yourself and the world; what you can do, what is right, what looks good, what can’t be done, what’s incorrect, what’s appropriate & what’s not, what you are good at, what’s just not your strength, ...

Behaviour is the externalisation of your beliefs… i.e. what you communicate to the world through your actions, your conversations, your writings, your appearance, your way of life; not just in what you do, but how you do it.

Here's the connection between Personal Brand and Personal Growth....There are 3 states of your Personal Brand:

  1. When your Beliefs and Behaviour are clashing, your Brand is weak (even confusing, at times!) e.g. Janet
  2. When your Beliefs and Behaviour are in synch but hold you within your comfort zone, your Brand is stagnant (not good, not bad either!) e.g. Sid
  3. When your Beliefs and Behaviour are in sync and push you beyond your comfort zone, your Brand is growing (woo hoo!) e.g. Arianna

Now, if you are wondering what is the ONE thing you will need for all the 3 states above?! It’s COACHING !!

A certified, professional coach can help you move from state 1 to 2 to 3; and also throughout state 3 which is the state of continuous growth.

I invite you to reflect on your Personal Brand, in light of your Beliefs and Behaviour…. and share your thoughts on this little discovery:)

Wishing you a blessed year, of growth and happiness!
