What will a Fractional COO do for my business?

As we launch our new business, I get that question a lot. Owners or CEOs of businesses from 8 to 150 people have asked my just how a fractional executive works in a business versus a fulltime operations leader? And it is a valid question as the idea of a fractional executive is popping up more and more in in business. So how does it or could it work?

First, let me explain why we launched this business. I have had a great career working with both public and private companies gathering knowledge and experience in operations as a GM, VP and COO. And all of the roles I have filled for over 20 years have involved cultural transformation and teaching new leadership teams how to be successful on their own. It is gratifying to see those who worked for me in those roles are now CEOS, COOs, VPS and GMs today. And I enjoyed that role at every company that I served. As 2020 crept along, I saw an opportunity to leverage this experience to small businesses that cannot afford to have an experienced operational executive. I saw opportunity to provide leadership and coaching in a part time role and give them the benefit of my experience at a fraction of the cost. And our new virtual business environment adds to that. So, how does a fractional COO work?

If you are a small business owner or CEO, your prime role is to develop and grow your business. That is a 24-hour job (I’m learning that!) and if you don’t devote your time to finding new customers, establishing community relationships and ensuring that your employees are all working towards the same goals that you are, your business will stagnate and suffer. Another large part of your role is to ensure that the culture of the company is something that you are proud of and your customers value. By hiring a fractional COO, you now have a person who you can delegate accountability for day-to-day responsibilities for items such as office management, weekly metric accountability, manufacturing operations, financial results review, cultural management and most of all, process identification and improvement. The little “mosquitoes” that consume you can be handled by the fractional COO so you can focus on what you do best; grow your business. The fractional will work with your team on daily activities geared toward customer satisfaction as well as helping you identify and correct talent deficiencies or gaps. The COO is a trusted sounding board for ideas and developing strategy. The fractional COO is with you and your team both in person as well as virtually to monitor daily results and issues. Although you are not paying for 40 hours of work per week, the fractional COO puts processes in place so that you get the support you need when you need it. It can be a flexible schedule that provides you peace of mind and your team a resource with experience and know-how.

So, what will a fractional COO do for my business? The most important thing that the COO will give you is this; a balanced life where you are not doing it all 24/7!
